What Is This on my Transmission? (64 150 Spyder/4 speed manual)
Posted by: Tumanator ()

Oh great poobahs of the forum....

Anyone know what this is on the bottom of my transmission?

I reviewed my references and either missed something or its some strange modification. Help!

Thank you!

Thank you James!

I just ordered the 64 assembly manual and think that will help with questions like these!

I will look into it, as the PO eliminated the white backup lights in the rear housings and the lack of wires running to this makes me think he "eliminated" the backup lights all together.

Learning as I go and grateful to be part of the Vair community!

Poor engineering on Chevrolet's part. When you remove the engine, you have to also remove the rear tunnel cover first, to unplug the wire to the switch. I have seen them cut and spliced, but most look like yours. If you need a replacement, contact me. I have a few NOS units that are still available for sale.

Also, If you are not concerned about factory correctness, many change to a switch that works off the shifter shaft. I believe matt has a how to in his FAQ

THIS IS BROKEN. Time has shown this was in a poor location as they bottom out or hit rocks, etc. The early 3 speed switch was in a much better safer location. I am speaking for some of the poobahs of which I am not.

This is the switch (see link) that works of the shifter shaft. You would have to weld/rivet a small mount onto the shaft and also actuating plate for the switch button to work with (or vice versa, see the FAQ procedure). Small mod but worthwhile.
