How does one remove the stator shaft from the case? I've tried knocking out, no luck.

That is a press fit just like the manual transmission "throw out bearing snout". It comes out after complete disassembly of the diff.

Diff is disassembled, guess time to take it in and have it removed.

A threaded rod with washers on top and a large enough spacer with washers inside the case will get that out. I've done it that way.

Couple things to look for when RE-Installing the Stator Shaft, Make sure you line up the drain back hole, and also check the cut out for the drain back hole in the diff, some have a knife edge that needs to be rounded out with a small file or it will rip a chunk out of the stator shaft O-Ring when you press it back in and you will get a leak. Also, replace the pinion shaft seal before you Press it back in, and take extreme care when replacing the seal as the new seals are crap compared to the old seals, the new seal has no re-enforcement around the bottom of the seal metal and will bend easy, its a good idea to remove the red paint off the seal peremitor before trying to press the seal in, use some non hardening sealer around it also as it will act like lube to help it go in, even with the proper J-Tool it will destroy the seal if you are not careful.

Right, it goes into the differential case, does not pull out.

I tried knocking it in, no luck. I'll try the threaded rod and washers.

Success today. After trying with a wood block and even tried heat all day yesterday, no luck. Decided I needed something that didn't give when pounding. Went to Lowes, bought a 1 1/2 X 2 coupler. Worked great. Now to have the case blasted and painted.
