Which one is NOS?
Posted by: vairmech ()

Toys are nice, some of us think our cars are toys. That is true but my real toys are the machine tools in the shop! I play with cars too.

Just so you can see that toys can be useful tell me which of these turbo thrust washers is NOS.

This just may give it away but here is the washer on the surface grinder locked on with the magnetic chuck. The grinder is still running, you can see the wheel on the left. This was not the final grind, there was another .0005" taken off as you see in the pic above.

I generally would do that by hand with sand paper and crocus cloth to polish. I did 2 of these and one that I had polished before was actually not flat! While I have never had a issue with any of the washers that I have polished by hand I was surprised at how nonparallel the two sides were.

Good work, you have talent. I would guess the one on top is NOS based on it being a little darker in the pic.

Thank you!
Believe it or not this is the FIRST real job I have done on ANY surface grinder. I have played with different items before this but only as a learning experience.

Nice Job, once I get my corvair finished, I have a bunch of machines that are surrounded by corvair parts that I need to finish assembling/restoring and a surface grinder is one of them.

Dimensionally, they are IDENTICAL.
So, as others have stated the ONLY clue is the more aged appearance of the upper washer.
Unless, . . . . . you faked that to throw us off track?
Have to go with the top one also based on what is visible.

In actuality the bottom one is the NOS one. I could not get the lighting to be equal on the washers but the top one was ever so slightly darker in real life and is the one I used.

BTW, I picked an NOS washer because it was the same size as the used one, all the aftermarket ones are larger and a dead give away.

Ken, If you reverse the poles on the table magnet, can you put material back on?

wagon Master, if you wire your cars horn up backwards, . . . . .
Will it suck instead of blow?

I think I would have to run the grinder backwards AND take the magnetic chuck apart to turn the magnets over so I can get the metal back on the washer.

To much work for what it's worth! LOL

OK, It's the 'Other' one - Yeah!

What do I win! smoking smiley

I'm pretty sure you need to de-couple and re-phase the STC (space-time continuum) with a rotary phase inverter and the standard molecular discombobulator to recombine the extrapolated material.
... At least that's what we used to do in the blacksmith shop...

Dave, you forgot to run all of that through the turbo-encabulator.
But it must be the second generation ones with the chrome reverse muffler bearings.
It will not work properly if you use the first gen. ones because the always seem to be needing a refill with a can of compression!
