Nice Running 140
Posted by: joelsplace ()

I started taking apart the engine from my '65 4/140 Sport Sedan that I recently picked up. PO said it was a nice running 140.
I'm starting to think maybe he lied. Crank won't turn.
I did drain about a gallon of nice clean looking water out. Maybe it is a special design that uses water?

NAH!
He just exercised a bit of hyperbole.eye rolling smiley

WoW, sorry to see that.
Hope the price was not too high.
Was it bought long distance?
Even without a battery and key, a "free turning" engine should be able to be turned by hand.

I saw it and knew he was nuts but it was cheap and I got a lot of good parts. Transaxle didn't have any water in it and the input shaft was the nicest one I've seen in a long time. 140 pressure plate in good shape too. Oily disk.
It's supposed to get down to 14 here Monday. Maybe I should fill the cylinders with water and use the ice to push the heads off.

Hopefully it was when parked... Dismantle and clean everything... inspect and you may get away no spending much... Looks Complete!

It's been parked for many years full of water. I doubt the carbs are even usable.

Did the seller say "when" it was a nice runner? All Corvairs used to be nice runners. Less now a days.

He was pretty vague about when. All he would say is not long ago.

"Not long ago" and "Not in a galaxy far, far, away" either.

Hey if you didn’t pay much and the engine is usable then your good. I’d love to get some spare 149 parts anyday.

About 99% of the people I've bought things from weren't truthful. I did buy a Sport Sedan from Phil recently and it was exactly what he said. Since I hadn't seen the car and had it shipped that was nice. Thanks Phil!

I wasn't complaining about the purchace I knew what I was getting. Just commenting on how dishonest people are. If I had bought it long distance and had it shipped based on his description I would have been furious.

I'd have to have a conversation with the seller. The engine sat exposed to the elements for quite some time.
Not in a damp barn
Not in a lean to
Not in a carport
Fuel lines and carb. linkages don't rust like that from condensation. It's been rained on repeatedly.

"Hey if you didn’t pay much and the engine is usable then your good. I’d love to get some spare 140 parts anyday."

This is not even a good core.

I don't think I've seen a distributor shaft that bad. It will be difficult to even get that thing apart. Sometimes I split the cylinders with a grinding wheel and chisel to get them apart. Maybe the heads and crankcase will be usable, probably the cam jourals are pitted. I'd be interested in the autopsy results. I'm having trouble finding enough 140 carb linkage parts these days.

Yeah I have done that before. Knew the guy was full of it but the price wasn’t much and I knew I could use the parts. Still frustrating thoug how guys try to fool people like that.

It probably ran good before it rolled off the Ark.

I have to agree with Anne Frank who said most people in the world are good.
Perhaps this seller was an (automotive) idiot.
Or maybe "not long ago" was relative to his age (was he 95+ years old?).
Or was too busy to look at what he had VISUALLY so stated what he remembered (?).
Perhaps he was simply a dishonest person that wanted to snooker someone.
I would be interested in purchasing the exhaust manifolds if you decide to part out this engine.

The exhaust manifolds and can linkage are good. The guy supposedly owned & operated an auto shop until he retired.

When I leave positive feedback on Ebay , most often first comment is "product as stated", fast shipping", not a lot of gobbledygook. gook. To me that says a lot more than AAA seller and such. I have bought things from this group and I felt they were better than stated. Great group.
