OT: Smokeless oil. Check this out
Posted by: gnvair ()
Date: December 26, 2017 08:33AM

The sneakiness of used car lots and other repair shops never ceases to amaze me.
A shop brought to my attention what some used car lots are doing on the late model V8 BMW's that are known for exhaust smoke due to bad valve stem seals.
They are using this product [www.smokelessoil.com]
Has anyone seen this yet?

Lee, Full synthetic oil do not smoke! Decades ago we had to use Mobil 1

So "Smokeless oil" is a someone repackaging... most likely..

What is the difference between smokeless oil and regular oil?

There are several differences, but the most obvious is the fact that ‘regular’ oils are petroleum based, while ENTEK Smokeless Motor is a man-made synthetic lubricant.

Matt, synthetic oils do smoke. BMW has been using synthetics on their cars since the early 2000s. This is something I can definitely vouch for. There is something else to this smokeless oil.

BMW oil issues never cease to amaze me... a while back they were having problems related to a 15000 mile drain interval on a normal viscosity oil...
something to do with a check engine light coming on. Instead of addressing the
problem the right way, "somebody" at BMW went ahead and changed the recommended
oil viscosity to some ridiculously thick viscosity, fixing the symptom that caused the check engine light to come on, but ended up causing unusual longer term rod bearing wear.

Anyways, I can vouch for Lee, yes "normal" synthetic oils do too smoke, but I've never heard of this "smokeless" oil- quite crafty that used car lots and repair shops are using that stuff. Hopefully the owner is informed with what they are doing to "fix" the problem!

Back when Mcculloch saws were still a quality product I used their saws and Mcculoch brand synthetic oil. It was also listed a ashless. That was some good stuff, almost no carbon, sometimes a little smoke on startup, no smell. It was hard to believe it was two stroke exhaust.

I had a leak on my DD Jeep that leaked oil onto the exhaust, it smoked like crazy and I only use synthetic in it, may not smoke if being burned in the cylinder, seems like the combustion would be better there.

"Smokeless"is a term often used in TW-W3 two stroke oils, as the additive package is ashless, which lessens the contamination of the waterways.

A certain amount of ash is desired in car engines to cushion the valves against the seats.

Rare to see gasoline fueled cars with smoke coming from the exhaust these days, but I'd say that well over half the time, the smoke is from a Honda or Acura.
Just based on my observations from my years on the road.

It's not an inexpensive product, about $15 a quart.

If you use smokeless oil in your car, will that stop the body from cancerous rotting? smileys with beer

Did anyone look at the ad? The oil was portrayed as being surrounded in gold! LOL

That is a synthetic oil, pretty sure of it even though the website doesn't really give any info that I could find. More than likely they have added a seal swell additive.

Yes it might be synthetic of some sort but conventional synthetic such as Mobile 1 or Castrol Syntec both smoke when burned in the exhaust. This I can attest to from experience.
As Richard noted, it could be some kind of 2 stroke oil. That is certainly a possibility.

It may quit smoking but how long before the rods start knocking. I'm OK with a little smoke.

Matt, I have to give you a big thumbs up for suggesting the full synthetic oil to stop the smoking because it worked for me. Old gas golf cart used around the property started smoking so I changed to a higher viscosity oil...no help...put in some of the"ring seal" crap...started smoking more. Golf cart was not worth rebuilding engine and it performs OK for us. Drained mixture out and put in 10W30 full synthetic as you suggested and it is almost smoke free...still smells but no smoke.Next oil change it should be even better. Thanks, Ken Arnold

Their return percentage is so low because you can't return oil that has blown out your tail pipe. Sounds like SNAKE OIL to me.

Yes it goes out the tailpipe!
That is the whole point!
It goes out without a big cloud of blue smoke!
But, you may be correct.
I have not tried Snake Oil, so I would not know if it smokes or not? grinning smiley
