Metal tag on front suspension?
Posted by: whubbell ()

While tearing down the front suspension of the Glenn Corvair (‘64 convertible), I came across a metal tag that was secured by one of the bolts holding the left upper A-arm to the crossmember. The tag is about 1x1.5 inches in size and made of fairly heavy gauge steel. Unfortunately it was heavily oxidized and after cleaning I can make out no clear discernible markings. My guess is it might’ve been a part number tag, similar to those found on carburetors, etc.

I’ll post a photo of it later today.

Has anybody else ever run across something like this?

Spacer for a bolt that was too long?

I found a similar one on my car also, it was too corroded to make out any markings.

I think it originally said "Removal of this tag prohibited by law" But I am not sure.

Bill my donor car for my restoration was a 64 Monza convertible and it was totally rust free including the suspension. The suspension on this car had the same tag on it. Being rust free it was a clean piece and showed no stamp or labeling on it. If I recall correctly it was on the driver's side bolt for the a-arm rubber bumper. I posted about the tag here on the forum but got no real answer. Some thought maybe it was to indicate heavy duty suspension option.
