How to make a turn signal LOUDER?
Posted by: rnch ()
Date: December 21, 2017 11:25AM

With the top down on Skyler the AirVair and the sun shining over my shoulders; it's sometimes difficult to tell if the turn signals have cancelled out.

I ordered a "Loud" flasher unit; but it's not all that noisy.

How can I make it louder? Would carefully drilling some holes in the case let more noise out?

My dad used to cut the bottom of a solo cup out and glue it to the flasher. That made a little resonator and helped.

I have the same problem...when us 7-8 cruise somewhere, I usually follow the lead car...a 65 GTO with 3.2's....all of a sudden he turns his turn signal on and we are on the intersate running about 70 or so...no exits...I know I have my turn signal going...then turn it off...happens with my corvair and 49 chevy fleetline.

When I first starting wiring my cars, I bought a very small buzzer, I think at radio shack, and I would put it at the end of the run...put power to it and it would buzz to let me know I have power to the power antenna, lights, etc.

I would think you could hook a wire to the flasher terminal, and then wire in that buzzer...then everytime you turn on the turn signal, it would buzz...could get on your nerves..but doubt it. You would need to wire it in on the + side of the flashers power.

I remember a Tech article back in the 1970's where a fellow described in detail how he glued a chicken pot pie tin onto the flasher!!!!eye rolling smiley

Novita makes a LF12 (LOUD FLASHER).

I haven't tried it since the standard EL12 I can hear fine.

If you try one, please report back.

MAKE SURE YOU BUY FROM A PARTS STORE -- some character has been sticking Novita labels on junk flashers and selling them online.

I have a "loud" flasher from AZ on my Greenbrier, and I can hear it fine unless I'm on the highway with windows down. On my '41 Pontiac I installed a 3x3 inch key buzzer module from a '70s GM car wired to ground and the flasher output, and its loud enough for all conditions.

Just unscrew the stalk from the column. Then you are forced to use hand signals.

Alternative is to mount two of those AWESOME car semaphores!

Novita makes a LF12 (LOUD FLASHER). Not a thermal flasher, better and is more tolerant of voltage fluctuations.

I haven't tried it since I can hear the standard EL12 fine.

Mount lights on top of the fenders facing you and wired to the signals so you can see them flash.

Get the 72 Dodge Dart fender lights and install them. They are nice and quite noticeable.

Or if that is a little too costly. How about the Camaro fiber optic fender system. The ad is just for the bezel, you would have to also get the optic cable and the adapter to the park light housing.

Oh....I see now. My first project had the answer...yes fender lights...you would not think a truck I paid $75.00 for would have his option...how lucky was I?

I have this one now. It's louder than the stock one, loud enough with the top and windows up and the A/C on.....just too quiet to overcome the top down and traffic noise.

Dave beat me to it with the aluminum pie tin recommendation. Sounds kind of goofy but it works.
I would imagine any louder flasher available would be HD that doesn't quit flashing to let you know if a light is out, an important feature for me. Are load specific flashers available anymore? I remember an article in the CORSA Communique about them, probably in the Tech Guide.

The pie tin is the way to go. You essentially are making a speaker cone when you do that! I have found that if you put a couple of small holes in the aluminum then epoxy the dish to the flasher it will stay better. You will have to put the flasher somewhere other than the clip where it was but it does work and it is annoying!

Oh we have pretentious, obnoxious, BMW drivers in S. Calif. that don't signal. Seems to be a global problem.

They abound here in New Orleans also. I've stopped carrying a gun in my car; was tempted by BMW drives far too often.
