Should I use this ring and pinion?
Posted by: Big Dave ()

I purchased this used ring and pinion set from a vendor and was a little bit disappointed when I took it out of the package it. Does this pinion look usable or is it junk? It's a 3.89 for my 63 Greenbrier.

If the pinion gear isn't loose on the shaft I would press it off and save the shaft. Good shafts aren't getting any easier to find!

These look very useful if you are looking for a paper weight or a sinker if deep sea fishing. I hope you did not pay for these.
Makes me want to go and check my differential oil level right now.

Big Dave, Contact the vendor about returning it for a full refund, and let us know if he gives you any trouble. He should pay the shipping too!

Well technically is is a "USED" part, but it is not serviceable - bascially junk.

I've seen this all too often when the transaxle lube runs low and usually was the original lube from the factory.

The hardening is worn off the gears - useless, not repairable.

Did it come in a case, or was it just the ring and pinion?

Shame on any vendor who looked at that and sold it as usable.

I have contacted the vendor and I'm waiting for a response. Hopefully I can exchange it at least for credit.

ah, yes! Thanks for the pics of your crispy purchase as it reminded me to always listen to your wife! Seems wifey was driving her rampy around good ol Bakersfield, and when she got home, complained to me about a burning smell.
Said rampy had never leaked a drop of diff grease, oil, yes, but diff seals dry as well as shifter, so I told her she was just getting an oil smell or just imaginin' stuff. Besides, how in heck could you get this burnin' smell up front when it is summer, no lower shrouds and all windows and vents open? (ambient over 100...Bakersfield in July)
Well, later I get an I toldyousomethingwaswrong phone call informing me horrible noises are coming from the back of her dear Rampy (LEAS95).
Short story long, the ring and pinion looked exactly like the one in your pics.
ZERO lube was in her diff, nada, none, zip! Gears were blue with a nice black crust.
Make them into a hard luck trophy. Sorry, I doubt any legit "vendor" would ever try and sell what your pics show, and if they did, you should let us all know.
