Yes, that's weird.

But, not a bad price for a low rust front crossmember if one is close to pick it up.

You are "technically" correct.
And I suppose, that if someone was only slightly familiar with automotive terms, that may be exactly what they were referring to.
Technically speaking that is.eye rolling smiley

Low rust? What is that plate welded to the rear of the center section?

That "plate" was specific to 68 and 69 Crossmembers(?) Someone else will chime in here.

That would be a nice way to take your time rebuilding your front end, while still being able to drive your car 👍

I've never parted out a 68 or 69 so guess I've never noticed that.

Did anyone ever figure out WHY GM added that extra rust collecting plate to those later cross members?

It was to cut down on rust! grinning smiley

Alas, it did seem to promote rust.sad smiley

I suppose that's possible, but from a design perspective, I don't see how that would prevent rust. It seems rather thin to be structural, else perhaps it was added to prolong the time before the crossmember collapsed! tongue sticking out smiley

It was a deflector for the gas tank in a head on collision, to minimize the chances of it getting ruptured. It is literally just a thin piece of sheet metal tacked on, you can tell it was a last minute design change.

That seems plausible. Although what motivation was there for that? I don't recall any crash testing being done at that point. Perhaps there were actual crashes that had ruptured tanks caused by the cross member?

Maybe it was done just to make little boys ask "why?". spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

The explanation I heard was it actually was for rust prevention. Supposed to help keep dirt and such from gathering there.(?)

And it has the rare 5 on 4.5 inch bolt pattern so someone could use Ford wheels also!
