OT: LED Shop Lights
Posted by: DRCORVAIR ()

I'd started replacing my fluorescent shop lights with LED some time back and bought a few "Maxlight" 2400 Lumen units on sale for $20. They are awesome but normally $35-$40. I then got lamps in bulk $10/ tube for retrofit and they were also good.
Holiday season special at Ocean State Job Lots- Maxlite 2400's for $15!!
I bought another 5. You can't get lamps alone for that price. It's a bluish /white light but you get used to it. Way brighter than conventional.

I have switched the 4ft fluorescent shop lamps out to LED. They fit the same lamp housing's. So far I am happy with them.
Here in Kalyphornya it costs more to dispose of one fluorescent tube than it costs to buy that same tube!!! Makes one wonder how many tubes are actually correctly disposed of!eye rolling smiley

I have just completed converting all lights in our home, yard and other buildings to LED. My Garage has six 4 ft lights and are now LED with 1600 lumens per bulb. These are quite adequate for the square footage (14 x 32). And there is a fixture above the bench with the same bulbs. My maintenance bay and lean-to each have 3 LED fixtures (4500 lumens each) to light up the area.

I have 3 more fixtures to convert for my 40 ft container. They will get 2400 lumens bulbs.

Well a nuisance problem has reared its head with these low cost LED lights in my garage. All weak FM station are drowned out by static until the lights are turned off.

I did a lot of reading from a Google search and learned a bunch.

Main point is that these low cost lights do not have EMI suppression built into them. I am going to try installing Clip-on Ferrite Ring Core RFI EMI Noise Suppressor Filter Beads onto the AC power leads inside the fixture to see if it gets the static reduced.

I have a metal roof that doesn't help in getting the signal in.

Antenna goes on the outside of the metal building......thumbs up

Metal building acts as a Farady cage. Or worse, a mode stirred chamber.eye popping smiley

Let us know if the ferrite works. And which ones they were. There are different ferrite compositions for different frequencies one is trying to stop going down wire.

They must be weak signals. The whole purpose of FM is the not have the signal affected by electrical noise. MILTARY. Are these plug into AC type radios or battery. The noise may be in the power supply and not the signal itself. Outside antenna is always a good choice. I have all LEDs in my garage, no problems with FM or cell phone. Have not tried any AM in a long time. I have about 150 hours of music on my phone and blue tooth it in the garage. I get between 20 to 30 FM stations and don't any of them any more. BTW Sirius is free for one month again.

AC plugged in radios. Trying to listen to Fox News talk station which is weak but acceptable when not being interfered with by lights. I can move radio outside on a long extension cord and is somewhat ok. Getting my body in between the antenna and the lights clears up the issue or turning those lights off.

Now this only happens with the lights in the garage and maintenance bay on left side of garage. No interference with LED lights in lean-to on right side of garage. Low cost rebuilt lights I did are in garage and maintenance bay. Honeywell LED shop lights I purchased from Sam's Club is in lean-to. $34 a Honeywell fixture versus $12 to rebuild the ones did.

My shop is all steel, kills most everything in there, but my house is wood, elevated 12 feet and got a decent FM signal to radios inside. I installed some name brand LED lamps, radio was playing, as I screwed in the 4th static came on the radio, 5th and it went to all static, completely eliminated signal to the radio inside, hooked it to the outside TV antenna and were back in service.

Key point is I never had the static this bad with the fluorescent lights. We lost our best country station in June which was country music from 1970s to 2000s, Now the only country we have is the newest stuff that is so whiny sounding or sounding like rap. Not my style. Now you know why this has became an issue for me in the garage.

I have to agree that any talk radio is going to be on a low powered FM station, even worse than what NASCAR is on. And hip hop and rap are on the most powerful. It is all about who the advertisers are targeting on the radio and it isn't the older folks.

I will get this static reduced enough where I can listen to more than 1 new country and 8 rap stations inside the garage area. I may have to set up a weather proof radio outside and run speakers inside where I want the noise. Or I may have to activate my dish satellite in the garage and leave that on as noise while I am working.

Plenty of ways to solve this noise issue. But I will first try these ferrite clips and check all my grounds while I have the lights open.

Can't have you missing Fox News, but that is mostly AM up here. I put what I would consider low cost LEDs in all my garage fixtures. I used the type that you disable the ballast, which is usually the source of electrical noise. As far as I know the only electronics in the LED tubes is a bridge rectifier so they can run on AC. Are your ballasts still in place? Are all the light fixtures grounded VIA a 3 wire plug? Did you try running a long extension cord for power from a source other than you garage?

All shop light fixtures I rebuilt have ballasts removed. 3 wires from circuit breaker box to fixture. Black and white AC to one end connection type bulb, i.e., black to + and white to - and ground wire to fixture. All checked with AC power to ensure proper operation, prior to being installed back on ceiling, and lights comes on during test. Of course, with the limited instructions, I needed to determine which wire got the black (live) wire. Wasn't real clear in their instructions or on the bulb.

Fox News, South Georgia is on FM 105.7 and 107.3. Both are weak stations. Might have to start playing my iPod down in the garage. Looking for variety of music noise. Tired of whiny country and hip hop.

Sirius is free for one month again. With a Receiver, computer or cell phone app. Any kind of music you want or Fox news. I can Blue tooth, from my phone to the garage speakers, to my Vair radio, to my motor home radio.

Free is cheap enough for us Vair guys. They run these fairly often. If you have a sirius radio in your car just turn it on it will work for a month.

They have to have something to regulate the voltage besides just turn it to DC. I guess they could use a resistor but if they are making noise then I would assume they have some kind of switching power supply.

Yes Sirius would work but I have home Sirius radio and it has its limits. Receiver cord length limited so it cannot be in garage, due to satellites and my add ones on each side of garage.

I will try it though from garage roll up door to see what happens.

I stream everything from the house wifi through my phone, and to the aux input on my shop stereo, or connect to a portable bluetooth speaker. Most radio stations have simultaneous web broadcasting.

What brand LEDs did you use for the retrofit?

I used some EarthLED Luceco brand lamps here in the house and noticed no RF interference with AM or FM. Now they seem to be out of business, or just out of stock on EVERYTHING.confused smiley

What I used, $5 bucks and change, they were selling in of lots of 4 and 6 when I got them. No problems, no noise, no interference that I can detect, turn on instantly in a cold garage. Garage lights up like a paint both.
