I have often thought about a shaft driven, worm gear style fan drive. Anyone hear of this being experimented with???

Was done years ago by Porsche with the 917 engine

Not exactly worm drive, but bevel gears.

Premature belt replacement, bearing wear, etc. (imho)

I have over 135,000 miles on the same belt and bearings, actually my alternator bearings are making noise now, if everything is aligned correctly and in good shape, they last a long time.
