1964 Turbo Exhaust Pipe - Not Normal?? ...but is there a reason??
Posted by: Tumanator ()

Turbo exhaust pipe taken from a 1964 Turbo 150 from a Spyder. Straight piped with no muffler.

I do not believe (based on photos of repros and NOS pipes I've found online) that 1) this indentation is normal and 2) there is a reason for it.

While it could be accidental damage, it looks like it was done purposefully by the PO (deceased).

Any thoughts you care to share are appreciated!

looks like what i had to do to mine to get it to fit into a vw beetle engine compartment, probably not the same thing with yours, but just saying.

Early model outlet pipes have that indentation whereas late model does not. Why I don't know but I always figured it was something to do with the heat shield and spare tire.

Thank you Nate! Now I know it's "normal" for early models.

It helps clear the pass side of engine bay when powertrain is lowered.

Lates do have an indentation permit the outlet pipe to tuck in closer to the cross over.I have had several NOS and originals.
The one on that pipe does not look like it is in the same spot.

The indentation on a late model is underneath the sheet metal, out of the engine bay where it sits right next to the up pipe. On an early the indentation is right where it comes out of the turbo.

Thanks Steve, gnvair, and thewolfe! Now I know its normal, has a purpose, and is even there on late models (albeit in a different spot)!

I'll paint and bake it now before I put it back on!
