Yenko Stinger Question
Posted by: Apittslife ()
Date: December 07, 2017 05:49PM

Hello, somewhat new to this forum, & it is my first post here CCF.

I had my 66 corsa 180, sitting out side my place of employment earlier this week, & a Guy stopped in, & asked me if I would be interested in buying another corvair?
I said sure, as long as it was a LM, & the price was right.
He said that he thinks it is a 68 corvair? And His Father had bought new, And that is was suppose to have been kinda rare, But He isnt a car guy.
He discribed it as being white with a blue strip down the center of the car. That got my attention!
He also told me that the car has been garaged for nearly 40 years, so the body is in great shape, But the engine was removed & sold years ago, & that it never had Bumper's.
I asked if it was a 4spd car & he said that he believes it was an automatic.

He stated, that His father wants the car out of the garage, sooner then later, as He has lost all interest in it. So I told him to consider it sold, & He has offered to bring it to me, next tyme he goes to visit his Father.

SO! Could it be a real Stinger? All the reading I did, says there weren't any 68 Stinger's.

I posted this question else where, in case you may have read it there as well? Thanks!
Paul

Possible, but not likely.
Worth investigating, for sure, but stripes alone do not a Stinger make!

Of course they were never built with an automatic transaxle.

Keep us posted!

68 is the only year that Yenko didn't make a Stinger at the dealer level as well.

Thanks for the info, thou I thought I read that in 67 there were a couple PG Stinger's?

Even if it turns out to be a base monza, or a Stinger clone? I will come out ok on the purchase price of the car.
If it's in as good of condition as he remembers it? I will pull the motor out of my corsa, & Install it in the 68 & drive her, while I fix the Corsa & find a 4spd transaxle so I can re-install the Original turbo engine.

Also keep in mind that tags were sold and you could put it on any car you wanted. I have the original receipt for the tag on my Stinger.

All Corvairs are kinda rare these days. I would believe it is a 68 AFTER looking at the trim tag and vin plate.
Since he is not a car guy, could it be a 68 Corvette?

What was the number? All the info out there including Charlie's book says they did not build any 68's at the dealer level as they did with the COPO 66 and 67's and the 1969 Goodyear car. Was it an over the counter tag car?

You got to go look at it.
Who knows, he could have the year wrong, could be repainted. Someone could of swapped in an automatic ? Who knows, remember Stingers we’re just old cars before they came collectable !

v8vair,
Look at his last post above.
He said he was going to buy it even if it is a Base model Monza because the price is so low!
Yenko or not, he says it is a good deal.

In regards to the "68" Stinger...

Ad is dated Oct 27, 1968. Red with White trim..Stage 1 trim...

Unknown YS number (or at least never divulged by anyone who knows)

but as Yenko switched to 8000 series tags for the other super cars..could easily been assigned (on paper) a 4 digit YS 8000 number or a 9000 like he did for the 69 Goodyear car YS-9700.

Hey - I had a Stinger with a PG! I know it was a PG, because I put it in there! With a loose converter and a good Weber motor, it was a great autocross car. Two foot special (gas/brake) and never take your hands of the wheel! 60 MPH in Low. Whee!
