Chrome vs. Cosmichrome
Posted by: phill66 ()

I had a pair of anodized aluminum headlight bezels cosmichromed. Turned out well
at substantially less cost than chrome. Chroming pot metal and anodized aluminum
is a multi step process and therefore costlier than chroming steel. Although
chrome plating anything isn't inexpensive.

I intend to have some engine bay items cosmichromed to add a little bling to the
otherwise clean but drab appearance.

Looks good! Tell us more! Was this a local company that did it? What kind of cost was involved?

I contacted the company that produces/markets the Cosmichrome system. While they
don't take on retail piece parts, they did recommend a vendor that uses their system.
It's equal in appearance to chrome as far as I'm concerned. It isn't cheap,
but approximately 40% of what I was quoted for chrome plating two bezels. Even then,
it might be too pricey for many. I'm considering getting a batch of different items
Cosmichromed to get the overall cost down.

Eastwood has a chrome powdercoating that looks very nice and doesn't require sealing or topcoating.

It is called Reflective Chrome.

I used it on headlight bezels, I think they will pass the 5-foot test.

Chrome on aluminum will last about 4 or 5 years, before it starts to fail. Yours look great, and I hope that the process that is used, will last better than Chrome on aluminum in the past.

A quick Google search reveals it's painted-on chrome.

Mixed reviews for Cosmichrome. It seems to depend on the quality of the process by the vendor doing it.

Not a DIY thing.

66vairman,
That's why I contacted the company to find out authorized/competent vendors. The
vendor I used came highly recommended, i.e., they knew his work.

Thanks Matt,
No drips, runs or errors. Well maybe some drips, but mine had no runs or errors.

Here's the vendor that did my headlight bezels if anyone is interested:

Steve Erb - Owner

Better to call him, he's slow answering emails. Had a two week turnaround on
my bezels including Thanksgiving.
