tansmission upgrades

Is there anything that I can do to beef up my transmission? I have a 64 Spyder that I'm going to build up and don't want there to be any issues with it.

If it's in good shape you won't have any issues with it. The differential is the weak spot. Get the 4 spyder carrier if you want it to be strong. You can break the stock differential with a stock 110 if you get too aggressive shifting and you have some traction. If you run stock size tires you probably won't break it.
If you have a posi it needs to be modified to keep the cover from cracking. There should be info on the mod here somewhere.
The 2nd blocker is weak but there isn't anything you can do it that that I know of besides running good synthetic oil. At least it doesn't blow up it just wears quickly.

Forgot to mention that you'll want to drill and tap the boss in the differential and transmission for drain plugs while you have them apart and use magnetic plugs.

Watch how hard your clutch engages. I had the Otto parts 6 puck clutch in a Corsa we had. It was a very mild engine. The clutch would engage very firmly.
I broke the main shaft power shifting from 2nd to 3rd.

I've never broken a main shaft or heard that is a problem. Maybe you had a bad one?
Here's two threads that discuss 4 spyder carriers.

No that was a good, quite shifting gear box.
If your clutch bites to hard you will break drive line parts.
Ask the air cooled VW guys as they go through this!

Sometimes the thin top cover plate on the diff. is replaced with a
fabricated 1/4" thick Steel one. Just keep some sort of vent too.

Rich Shepard or Ken Hand snapped a '65 140 3.55 Mainshaft at PIR in 2005.

Forget who was driving....

On my 64 Spyder I had Ken Hand machine a 9 bolt LM differential to fit in the EM 64 differential case. Much stronger than the stock 5 bolt and if you are running a posi the posi side of the diff carrier is beefier on the LM carrier and was broken off on my original diff carrier when I disassembled.

The early 6 bolt posi covers are notorious for cracking. Jeff at the Corvair Ranch showed me a few that were cracked. He said he magnafluxes everyone of them and finds cracks. What Nick described is the best way to do it. Another option is the billet steel cover sold by Clark's.
