Starter Housing Cylinder - OK to paint inner wall?
Posted by: Tom Rahochik ()

I have my late model starter completely dis-assembled. I will be glass beading
the outside and inside area of the starter housing cylinder. Any negative effects
if I paint the inner wall of the starter? The field coil assembly and pole shoes
are then attached to the inner wall. This inner wall was fairly rusty when I
tore it apart........

I wouldn't do it. No one will see it and there 'could' be negatives. Painting just the inside of the starter nose cone might be cool,
or even the outer surface of the nose part. Wouldn't paint the flange where it bolts against the differential so you will have grounding.

Paint will move the field coils closer to the armature.... may cause problems..

The pole shoes need to be grounded to the case of the starter.

I think he means overspray getting into the housing - Not a problem in my opinion. Why would you intentionally paint the inside?

Around here everything rusts! Just how thick is your paint? Magnetic flux goes through paint just fine.

In the motor shop, we did not mask off the inside of the case on any motor. But, we did not pile on the paint where things needed to be, like wire in slots.
