So, took the glass out need help for race car
Posted by: Bobdudeman ()

I took the passenger and driver side glass completely out of my car and actuators to lighten it up for a dedicated race car. Anybody have any ideas or have they done anything like this. I want to cover up the actual window channels on the top of the doors to give it a nice clean look. Any suggestions would be great, thanks

Possible Temp... make some aluminum covers and bond them on

force a piece of rope in the opening, then top it off with some self leveling sealer.

I was thinking of riveting it, just wasn't sure if others have done so or it was necessary.

To me rivets aren't a smooth surface. Flaggers/starters and crew leaning inside car might leave some skin on your door. I would think a vinyl moulding strip with adhesive. My opinion of course.

Did you find any history of the car?

Good idea. That can be removed with out filling holes as well. As far as history on it, no dice. I wish the fellow could have done that for me. It's a Yenko clone for sure. Sticker and all. Got it fired up for the first time in a while after new battery, coil and mag points. It's going to be a while to get it cross ready but it's a nice easy project.

You can use aluminum pop rivets just make sure you put them in square and file the tops so they are smooth. If you really are anal about it use countersunk rivets. You can do the same with the interior of the door under the door panel area and even take a lot of the bracing out and still have a door handle. If that doesn't matter then you can take it all out and run a small cable with a loop to open the door from the inside.

For the top of the door you can use heavy aluminum roof flashing and for the inside you really need .030 sheet to make it look good.

Thanks Ken, that's the route I was planning. Any thoughts on where to get the sheeting for the inside door panels?

Use the plastic that Ken used for his door panels. Cut strips and glue it in flush with the top of the channel.

One question though, is that legal for your class? Most stock related classes require door glass and hardware.

Hey Bob I really don't know. This used to be a race car and I really haven't done anything to it except take the Side Glass and actuators out of it. This completely gutted on the inside. So it has to racing seats. I wanted to be a purpose-built race car as it already is I just wanted to take the glass out of the sides to lighten it up a bit. I think you autocross will be fun I just want to be able to drive it on the course.
