First painted cove is probably the 62 Nova SS model.

I'm not sure when the painting of the cove started but Chevy II's didn't get the SS option until the '63 model year.

All of you have it wrong! It is Resale Red paint that increases horsepower and lessens the co-efficient of drag equaling about 80 horsepower. Just ask me, my 63 vert in resale red is very fast and will do almost 75 downhill. Ask Matt, he has seen my car! Hmm, maybe it was still rusty then!

If the paint is from MAACO it is even slipperier but you have to be careful that the extreme speed does not peel it off.

Actually, 1961 was the first SS, and it was an Impala 4 door! Unfortunately, it only appeared on a brochure, and it's doubtful that any were produced on the assembly line. That is according to what info I have been given to understand is the facts.

But the '62 Impala SS did indeed have an argent silver cove.

I like the cove being painted a contrasting color. My car has white stripes and if I painted mine I don't think anything but white would look right and I'm not crazy about it being white so guess it'll stay the same. Missed HP opportunity.

Don, I completely agree.
With the chrome trim surrounding the cove area, it is just begging for some kind of color other than matching the body.

Corsas were no more than a few emblems and a snazzy dash anyways right?

In Mark's brochure towards the bottom of the red type it says "available in Chevy's Convertible or any other luxurious '61 Impala model". I believe it was Hot Rod Magazine that tested a '61 SS 2 door hardtop with a 409 4sp and they said something about that the word Incredible should be used instead of Super.

lacquer based argent silver is lighter than base coat/clear coat argent silver so that should be taken into account your hp rating.
get out your elcometer too, as the paint thickness will also have an effect on performance.

Mark, I mentioned the Impala SS series 62 to 64, but, they were NOT painted argent silver! Those are brushed stainless steel panels! That doesn't count for first use of Argent Silver cove.

As far as I can find, the Nova SS is a painted cove. Yes! Here it is, the PPG note for the 1963 Nova cove, "Chevy II only, rear end filler panel". DDL-8568 Argent Silver!

Frank, after 55 years, my memory may be in error. Yes, the '63-4's used engine-turned appliques in the rear cove/trim strip. But I was thinking the '62 was argent silver. Maybe because that's the only way a promo model could be so trimmed. I haven't seen a full-scale '62 Impala SS in quite a while. LOL

Mel and wagonmaster, the Corsa was, as I have stated ever since the '60's, $74.20 worth (in '66 year dollars) of dash panel and trim. A few added pieces of hardware, some argent paint, and exchange value on the rest. The cove paint was just part of it. It was indeed a cheap but highly effective merchandise marketing tool. And anyone who "promotes" the Corsa as something special just proves my point. That's the laughable part! (Note that I fully admit and agree that the Corsa dash panel is a gorgeous panel, and is highly effective and useful for modifications. But that's beside my point.)

When introduced, the 1962 Impala SS had a silver cove panel. Later in the year Chevrolet added the rear "engine turned" trim that really set them apart.

Thank you, Dan.

Maybe that's what it is! The "standard" Impala had argent paint cove, and the SS had the engine-turned applique.

Mark,
Not paint - they were stamped aluminum panels.
