Magnahelec gauge hook up
Posted by: Ratt643 ()

I bought a magnahelec gauge to balance carbs. i was wondering how the hoses hooked to the gauge. There are two ports on the side (high and low) and two ports on the back.
The gauge came with hoses on the side high and low ports. With the hoses hooked to the full vacuum ports on the carbs (horizontal), the gauge swung to the left and pegged. Regardless of how mush I adjusted the idle screws, the gauge stayed pegged to the left. The only way it would swing was to rev the engine to about 2500 rpm. Then the needle would start to swing to the center and then right of center.
If someone can post a pic of how their magnahelec is plumbed, it would be greatly appreciated, or any help for that matter!

Sounds like it hooked up properly.. Is your crosshaft disconnected from BOTH carbs?

Check that both Choke pulloff ports are sucking!

Swap the hoses side to side to check the gauge...

Is your meter 15 -0 - 15 ? Doesn't take much to swing it 15" h20 [ water]

TIP: from Tom Keosababian

when done balancing and happy with reading...

Change the hoses to the VA ports..... there is vacuum there..but very low...

Fine tune the idle balance!! Difference can be substantial!!

Swung to the left indicates a differential gauge. If you are using the same vacuum port on each side you have a good reference.sounds like the low side is winning pressure wise. Whatever bank that is on the low side has issues. likely the idle circuit. If you haven’t already,do a compression check before troubleshooting an engine winking smiley

Balancing is for Airflow ONLY...carb circuits have nothing to do with it...

But YES a compression test would be usefull

Good point, a plugged idle circuit might cause a higher vacuum. If good compression and proper adjustment, a vacuum leak would be likely.

Matt,
Had the left carb linkage disconnected.

Ratt643, I have my Mag plumed as you mentioned to the High and Low side ports with the rear ports being blocked off. I have 2 three foot lengths of clear tubing connected to the ports with Male to Male drip irrigation connectors on the ends. I remove my vacuum hoses from the choke pull offs and connect them to the drip connectors. I disconnect the cross shaft and balance at idle.

It is important that both carbs are touching the adjustment screws while balancing because without the tension of the throttle return spring, the carbs can easily move from the idle position.

Once balance is achieved at idle, I connect everything back up and adjust the linkage to achieve balance at around 1,500-2,000 RPM. It just takes some fiddling with it to make sure you aren't affecting the idle balance while correcting the off-idle balance. If you haven't already, take care of the linkage slop as much as possible.

I havent gotten around to getting the model number of my magnahelec gauge but its a 1-0-1. That would explain why it pegs the gauge. Ill have to start looking for a 15-0-15. Thanks Freeman for the info!
