64 Turbo crankshaft color...
Posted by: Grandpacorvair ()

Picked up a 64 turbo engine that I may rebuild.....maybe being the operative word. It's full condition is yet to be determined...

Right now it's locked up..having sat for 30 years..

In any case my question is the crankshaft seems to be an odd color..at least to my eyes....almost looks like an aluminum color...

What say the experts??

Thanks..

Sorry for the poor picture.....

Did the case have oil in it? Or is that why it seized up? Might be some sort of corrosion, after i cleaned the oil all off of mine, literally you could watch the rust creep up on it. Coated it with a thin layer of oil and rubbed it all off and it was fine.

Interesting it has a PG bell housing on it, the early spider engines had a nodular Iron crankshaft that was a different color than all the others, think it was 62-63 only, but think it was more of a Black color.

The bell housing was an extra, attached for convenience.. good catch.. smiling smiley

Still wondering about the color of the crank.. sad smiley

The engine was stored, without oil, top cover off, over the years...there is some rust but not awful. We disconnected the two rods we could get to and we were able to 'encourage' the two pistons to move...so far no luck with the crankshaft..

Hard to tell from the pic - but I have seen engines that have sat non run since the days of lead have the same hue as the lead deposits in the pan on other internal parts including the crank.
