Question: Anyone use Aluminum exhaust packings? If so, what copper sealant did you use? Any downside?

I use the Al exhaust packings without any sealant on my 140 motor. I don't seem to have any issues.

I have a set of the machined aluminum packings. You have to make sure they are actually sealing as the taper does not always match the machined taper on the manifolds.
Also if the manifold surfaces where the packing seals is not absolutely perfect meaning no pitting or erosion, they will leak.
Sometimes you won't really know until you turn the heater on.
I personally use the blue Fel Pro ones on my cars including my turbo (13 psi of boost). No issues. I also keep NOS GM ones around as they were also really good.

If you read the labels on the RTVs you will see there is a difference in the copper RTV, even the copper RTV has different ratings. Get the highest rated one and even then it will burn or rather cook some. As has been said I would not recommend using these for anything that you want to use the heater, even with the RTV.

I remember back in 2002 I got some aluminum exhaust packing from "The Source" to use on my headers. I put them in without any type of sealant and never had any type of problems with them.

Thank you all for your comments. My car spends the winter in my garage and I've never used the heater in 12 years. So I'm going to install the aluminum packings and report back. Thanks again...now I need to decide if I use copper sealant or just go as they are...

We sold a lot of these when Ed Corson brought them out. If you didn't use ultra copper then later when you wanted to remove them you'd find they had"welded" themselves to the port tubes.

I had a set in a hot 140 weld themselves to the tubes also, I like the blue ones like Lee.

Hmm, I’ve never heard of the blue Fel-Pro gaskets. What material are they? I like that there’s another option.

I am not sure what they are made of but they are harder and less likely to crumble than the graphite ones. They seem like the old ones that were tan/brown in color that were offered by the vendors back in the 80's and 90's.

Indeed! The crumbly part is what I don't like. With it being Fel-Pro, I might check my FLAPS to see if they have (or can obtain) them. Thanks for the info.!

So are you all saying the graphite ones are not the ones to use? I have used them a number of times with very good results. What is the issue with them?
