Bad TC Symtoms
Posted by: Bill Warren ()

My green 68 with PG runs and drives great but recently it feels like it struggles to idle when I come to a stop. I have resorted to putting it in N for long stops. The transmission shifts great. The engine idles at 700 rpm until it slowly starts to decrease and die. Just wondering if this is a sign of a bad torque converter.
Thanks,

Not normally....only failure mode of our TC's seems to be aabad sprague clutch that causes foaming at highway speed.

Check for a clogged Idle Siphon tube in the carbs.

Does your car have a Pertronix-2 (red module) ignition?

Craig, Matt,
Carbs are original to the car and seem to work great on both sides. Only problem is long stops in gear. Runs out great at all speeds. I'm still using points on the 68. I feel a shudder as it starts to die and I think I hear a whirling sound from the trans/diff area at idle in gear. I do occasionally see trans fluid under the car but I can't find the leak. Fluid level is good.

How / What Tools are you using to balance the carbs?

Bill is the blowby from the vent tube into the air cleaner heavy? Sometimes enough of the vent 'fumes' can foul the fresh air needed to feed the carbs.

Try this: with engine to operating temp and e-brake set (of course) select D and then remove air cleaner top and observe smoke from tube inside air filter element. Also pay attention to idle speed, if blowby is excessive you may notice an idle speed increase when top is removed and a drop when re-installed.

best wishes, Steve

I have a Uni-Syn. I'll go out and see if carbs are the same at idle. I have not touched the carbs in years. It runs great otherwise.

I just helped a neighbor with his new acquisition ...idled terrible and rattled badly even at 1200 rpm [ hot idle! ] let alone at 400 / cold.

Pull offs are fine/ chokes work perfectly... turn out crosslink was adjusted perfect after synching.

Previous owners had been adjust one carb for idle problems... 1 segment difference.....on Unisyn!

Balanced carbs for airflow and set idle to 600 HOT...Idle Mixtures were fine..

sweet now... he says..

OK...carbs were a bit off. I adjusted them back to what you see. Test drive went well. I did not feel the car trying to die at a long stop, I guess the lesson here is to check carb balance at least every 5 years. Thanks for the help.

Great!! LUV easy fixes!

And as I taught my neighbor....

when changing idle on the road...

1 Shut off Engine

2 Adjust idle SPEED screws the same on both carbs...

3 Restart and drive it a few miles and see what you have.

Same with Choke adjustments.... you make the adjustment and drive it...

Let it set overnight and then decide if any more adjustment is needed..after starting..
