Have your battery checked and bearings in the alt. would also heat up
but should have alt. light to tell of a problem. All alts get hot
while in use but if it smells hot something is wrong .

My IR gauge shoes the pulley to be 85F.

Alternator is charging properly, spins easily with belt off, no wires getting too hot, no electrical 'smoke' escaping.

I do think my poor old 914 starter motor is feeling the strain from turning over a higher compression 6 cyl engine. I put on a spare Porsche 928 V8 starter. Fits perfectly. Only problem is engine winds over fast with no start. Inclined to think that starter is spinning engine in 'wrong' direction. Put 914 starter back on and vroom straight away!!

928 starter is backward from typical Bosch VW/901 series engines. Look inside the Bosch starter for wear on bushings and brushes.

Another 60 miles today. Engine oil pan about 80 deg. C. All good.

My 928 starter motor logic went like this.

928 has engine in front of gearbox. So does my Corvair powered 914.
All porsche engines are made to run in same direction.
My reverse rotation engine now turns in correct direction for 914 starter
928 and 914 starters are both mounted in same orientation in bell housing
Therefore the 928 starter motors turn in same direction as 914 starters
Therefore 918 starter is suitable for my 914 with RR Corvair aplicatoon.

Great logic. Apart from the fact that it is WRONG.

Bugger. Got to laugh at myself

WIll get the 914 starter overhauled.

Best regards
