Ext Mirror select for Greenbrier
Posted by: DRCORVAIR ()

I'm at the point of wanting to weld in backing plates for my exterior mirrors and have come down to two options. The Repro 60-66 for other GM trucks or the Bronco Lo Mount style.
Either one should fit up to the door and obviously the GM is closer to original but should work better. The Bronco mirrors are larger and fold back for better utility. I had these on a 64 Corvan and they worked great, minimal vibration and good vision. West coasts are bigger than I want.
Thoughts?

Thanks

From a purely ascetic stand point the originals I like a lot better.

The Ford ones look like Ford ones (I use to have a ranger with those)

Depends on how OEM you want for a look. For a good variety of photo examples, google Corvair vans, trucks, Rampsides pictures and see what others have mounted.

Personally, I like the factory reproduction mirrors. If you feel that they stick out too far, you can adjust them by loosening the mirror mounting nut on the stud, and rotate closer to the body. If you want, you can even purchase a round mirror with a stud in the center of the mirror. I am glad that I have a pair of these mirrors in my parts collection, in the event that I ever get to restoring my Greenbrier. Sometimes, I think that it will be faster and less expensive to purchase one that is already restored, or a solid survivor. My only requirement is that it be a 1964 with an automatic, preferably white with red interior.

I mounted the 38-5730 mirrors shown on the post. I purchased them from Clark's and I'm ver happy with them. They offer a good view of the rear and seem to be quite steady. I mounted them using rivnuts in the doors and 1/4-20 SS bolts to attach. They're very steady and best of all, they look good. My 64 GB wins awards at every car show.

Food for thought: This is a mirror stem from Clark's with a 5x8" mirror head I got on Amazon for $9.

Here's a link to the mirror head:Amazon CIPA mirror head

I didn't weld the backing plate. Instead, I used a 5x3" plate that I drilled the 3 holes in and used nylon lock nuts.

My 63 Brier in Michigan came with F___d style mirrors with head painted body color. See attached pic.
After 5 years they look like they belong there😀

My newly purchased 65 in Fl. Has Jr. West Coast style mirrors.
They stick out way to far. Looking at re-engineering them closer to van body.

Art, some of the best pics of that style installed that I'd found. I'm convinced. I do think Ron's look pretty good as well. Looks just like my 64 did so it doesn't really seem wrong, the others are just more "right".
I'll double check the access for using a loose backing plate, If I can get to it I'd rather not weld anything in. W/ only the single mounting location, it should be easier.

There really is no "wrong" in my opinion. My truck came to me with only one west coast style mirror on the driver's side and I really didn't like it. I toyed around with several ideas before I decided on what I wanted. Form, fit and function (in that order) is why I made this choice.

As for the backing plate, just take the panel off inside the door and you'll have easy access.

As for backing plates. The excellent re-pop mirrors Dann made and are available from a couple venders, each come with a backing plate. When I installed these mirrors on my Rampside... I used Goop adhesive to secure the backing plates in place. This way they are both secure and also removable someday if desired.

On my Greenbrier I used nut-serts to mount the West Coast mirrors. No backing plates. These all stainless steel mirrors are available from NAPA. But I had the tubes custom shortened and re-threaded to bring them in closer to the truck body. Like the OEM West Coast Coronado mirrors.
