PLEASE read post - I'm looking for a place to label 8ga wire
Posted by: OttawaCorvairGuy ()

Craig is labeling the rest of my wires, but can not do the 8ga.

Waytek will only label wire if one buys 1,000 feet or more.

I'm looking for a place to label 8ga wire.. Do you know of a place?

Thank you,
Tony

Have a stamp made and do it yourself, there's not that much, is there?

Close to 30 feet worth and it would be nice to have it stamped every 6 inches.
Also I do not want it to rub off or be effected by oil, gas or grease.

How many separate things do you have wired with that 8 gauge wire. Being 8 gauge is a lot bigger than most wires except battery cable it seems that you could remember what it went to.

I don't have a good answer for your label problem.

In Broadcast we use a Cable Label Printer made by Brady. It prints on special plastic 'cable labels' that rap around the cable and have a clear section that overruns the printed area. These last and are not bothered by chemicals.

The printer system is about $600 and the labels are $30 to $40 a roll! hot smiley

Not cost effective for a single cable.

Getting it printed on the actual cable insulation is difficult if you don't have the proper equipment. That is why companies require a large order before they will do a labeling change.

I think Craig has a way to print label information on Heat-Shrink tubing. I know he does that for the smaller wires supplied with his replacement Fuse Blocks. grinning smiley

If he is following this thread maybe he can jump in and let us know if he can do this for short pieces of HST that can be 'shrunk' on the cable at intervals to provide what you are looking for!? eye rolling smiley

As rowin4 pointed out, the size should tell you where it goes. Pick a unique color as well. confused smiley

I hope this helps.

Anyone know of a place that can label 8ga wire for me?
BTW - Not Waytek or Craig as they can not do it.

Over time I will need 3 rolls labeled with different print.

Otherwise I will have to use flat labels that could fall off over time or fade.

Thank you,

Tony,

You can use different colored shrink tubing. You can get by with a color difference or use an indelible pen and write on the tubing before it is heated. We do this on commercial aviation wiring. The writing also shrinks, looks good...

Thank you.

Don't get me wrong I have thought about this and other options.
But it will not work for those who are color blind. Like me.
And there are more wires in an Ultravan "RV" than a car - so you run out of color choices too.

Everyone, I'm not trying to be difficult. I have a reason for wanting to label every wire.

1. I want to do it right!

2. There will not be any wiring diagram to help

3. A lot of the wiring routes in and out of walls, through ribs and hiding places; making it harder to trace.

4. My hope is to sell it, once I have finished it. Who knows who will buy it and be working on it in the future. So I want to make it easier for someone to trace and diagnose any wiring issue..

OK, I think we understand your goal!

Excellent solution for a badly designed Headlight circuit!! smileys with beer

Now tell us "what" you want the "label" to say. Maybe we can figure out 'how' once we know 'what' you think it should read. confused smiley

Again "assuming" that you have this worked out and have developed a 'kit' to correct the original, not-so-good wiring in the Ultravan would any of our Corvair-centric dealers be interesting in selling it? Just thinking outside the box to see if there is a way to justify the purchase of 1000' of 'special labeled' 8 AWG wire!! drinking smiley

Dale,

Not rude - merely to the point. I don't need people to understand. All I need is to find a place to label the 8ga wire when needed.

FYI - I'm the one making and offering the kits. Four different kits in all.
I'm retired and what little funds I make helps with my personal stuff.

BTW - The target market is very small when it comes to supplying Ultravan items.
Lucky if it is 2% of 376 made.

And I should know first hand. Why you might ask yourself.
I do what I can to help others - while fixing my own.

1. I joined the club in 2008 and for almost 10 year before that there was no windshield supplier out there.
I needed 2 myself and others had been looking for a while, before I joined.
So I stepped up!
I had to order 26 sets of windshields or 52 pieces of glass, just to get the factory to pull the mold out of storage.
It took me over 3 years to sell them all.

2. I currently offer custom made R&P steering arms, tie-rod sleeves, and control arms.
Example about the less than 2% market I spoke of above: I have only sold 5 R&P steering arms kits (1.33% of the market) and 2 sets of upper control arms (just over 1/2 percent of the market) in 2 years.

3. Now that I have moved on to rewiring our Ultravans, I'm going to offer kits to help anyone I can.
Do I think I will sell any = NO. But again I like to help when I can and I have to make them anyways for our 5 Ultravans.

Tony- your percentages get higher if calculated out of the number of running/known coaches smiling smiley

Hope to be an owner ones day soon...

True. But Wow = 1.33 up to 5% at best.. It is still only 5 orders sold out of ?? running coaches...
It will never be numbers like seen with Corvairs, Camaros and so forth. GRIN

You might want to try this place [connectivedesign.com] as they do list one of their services as wire marking, and short
runs.

Kevin, Thank you I will try them tomorrow.

Eric, Good luck on finding an Ultravan.

Now that PAUL HARVEY showed up with THE REST OF THE STORY it makes more sense. Your not just running a #8 wire somewhere , you want to identify it for a reason. The guy's on here are coming up with some good ideas and leads. Hope one pans out.

You and me both! Because all I ever asked for was to find a place that can label 8ga wire in small amounts. The rest of the story was irrelevant! ggg

Good night all
