spacer on rear axle?
Posted by: GWLee ()
Date: November 18, 2017 12:39PM

Does anyone know the purpose of these spacers on the rear axle, behind the back plate. It is about 1/4" thick. This is the driver's side. There isn't one on passenger side axle.

This is on my 60. Should there even be a spacer there?

Any 60 owners that can verify if their 60 has them?

Thanks

I think the spacers were on 64 rear ends only if I remember correctly.

Thanks Dave. I had a 64 differential in my 60. Which i just removed. But since I'm now going back to an original 60 differential I'm thinking I need to remove it. Does that seem correct.

I guess I need to find the rear suspension I took out of the 60 parts car, and see if there where any spacers on it. But I have those parts in 2 buildings and it was easier to ask than actually look.

I just want to remove it if it isn't needed. It looks like it would pull the axle out, from the differential with it in place.

Thanks

Why were they used in the first place?

IIRC Bearing housing is thinner.

OK, I get that.

Now, I want to put a 64 rear suspension under my 61 Coupe. Am I ok to use the axles and bearings on the car now (61)?

Thanks Matt, I was also wondering what purpose it served.

It's gone, be removing it before the axles are installed Monday!

I will keep it in case anyone is looking for one, which I doubt, but you never know.

Thanks!

I have no '63 sperience but along with the backing plate lip Sam mentioned, the '64 plates also had changes in the bearing area. Earlier backing plates had a oblong thick plate spot welded on the backside, and a hole the size of the bearing shoulder.
'64's did not have the plate on the back side, only a 1/4" thick spacer the size of the bearing mounting flange. The bearing shoulder pilot hole was also bigger.
When I bought my '61 Lakewood it had a mismatch of parts. With '64 swing arms and drums with '61 axle bearings and backing plates. They did not rub but I wanted to install '64 style bearings, but the hole in the backing plate was too small. I replaced the backing plates with '64's but now the axle bottomed out before the bearing seated till I realized I was missing the 1/4" spacer.
Hope this helps.

Yes good info.

I switched the backing plates on my 60 to a 62 or 63 so I could use either 60 thru 63 rear axle bearings, because the hole for the bearing was bigger on the later. Now with his info I understand the reason for the spacer.

Thanks so much!

Correct the spacers were '64 only. I think to help the inside of the rear brake unit and tire clear the 64-only transverse leaf spring with the thinner bearing housing.

Based on the info wagon master shared, I might have used 64 backing plates. I'll have to go look to see, since he shared the what and why?

I have been working on this car for a very long time and things get done and then you go back and wonder, why did I do this, this way!

I do remember that I needed the larger hole so I could use the larger bearings and there was a spacer there, which Dad had installed for what ever reason. But I do know that there was a metal piece welded on the back of the 60 backing plates, but the ones on the car now, I'm not sure. But I will find out tomorrow.

It's great there are so many people well versed on the corvair.

The plate didn't seem to cause any issues the 2 years I drove it, before I started the engine rebuild.
