Need I.D. on part 3863436
Posted by: 66vairman ()

A club member has a differential sleeve with the number 3863436 on it.

It looks like it may be for an early or late POSI differential.

Can anybody confirm the number?

Thanks.

What sleeve is it?

The spacer that goes with posi clutch discs?

Put the number in GM Parts Wiki - all marques - no hits

There are GM parts books from the 50's and 60's listed.

The Posi housing is 3863431...

That makes the number really close...

WAG - it is an original part (number); not a replacement part number???

What's on the part is probably a "casting number", not a part number. After a given casting is machined into a particular configuration, then it's issued a "part number". Some casting spawn multiple part numbers; the worst offender being the venturi cluster.

The front of some GM parts books cross-reference casting numbers and part numbers. I looked in my "big" GM parts book (1967) but number 3863436 was not on the list.

Years ago I had a GM Parts History Book.

It's purpose was to cross reference superseded part numbers with new ones.

Unfortunately I left it behind at the Corvair shop I used to hang out at many years ago. I imagine if one were inclined, they could possibly find one at a swap meet, old dealership, oe maybe even flea bay.

I have a pinion adj sleeve with cast number 38634xx where 'xx' is hard to read but looks to me like 89. Suspiciously similar to 36 in hard-to-read appearance.

Part number on box is 3889700, for '66-9 manual.

Does anyone know if there is any rhyme or reason to the GM parts numbering scheme?

Yes the number is a casting number, so yes it could be a part number, or it's a base number for the machining number.

Steve - Thanks very much! - That drawing looks like the part, but I'll take a printout to the owner this weekend to verify.

I noticed the dwg. origin date is Jan. 1, 1964 and the final revision date is Sept. 2, 1965 so that suggests it's a LM Posi R.H. cover.

If anybody has any other input, it's welcome.

I just looked at a 65-9 posi side adjusting sleeve and it has the same
number cast into it: 3863436. Even though it isn't the part number it is
the clutch pack side bearing adj sleeve for 65-9. Hope this helps a little.

best wishes, Steve

Thanks Steve - I'll pass that information to the part owner.
