My experience with LED TAIL LIGHTS...

While I was building my 49 fleetline with frenched 59 Caddy tailights, my best friend and I were at the Charlotte Auto Fair and inside we saw a LED display. My best friend said here is your lenses you need....LED'S.

I said turn them on so I can see what they look like....his response "They are on". I laughed and said no...turn them on. Again, they are on and really bright. I said not from here on the side.

If you were directly behind the bulbs...they were okay...but not even a trace of light from the side....I prefer other drivers see my car when they are perpendicular or to the side...and not be IN THE DARK.

Being I made my own housings, I painted them SIVER...THE MOST REFLECTIVE COLOR. White runs second. The most reflective color was on my CPP exam to become a Certified Professional Photographer...one of 154 questions. Silver reflectors are what is inside all Soft boxes and outside reflectors are all silver. My tailights in my 49 Fleetline are super bright and seen from the side...super bright.

Apples and oranges regarding reflecting light

Polished silver (or most metals), and silver plate on flat glass is the most DIRECTLY reflective surface for a true image.

White surfaces reflect, but SCATTER all light frequencies.

So if you have a precise reflector, a polished metal surface works well to get light were you want it - a specific direction. This is why headlights use a metalized reflector.

Silver paint is not the same and the OVERALL reflectivity of white is better than silver paint, which really looks grey, as some light is absorbed.

In a Corvair tailight housing the design is meant to scatter light from a bulb filiament to the tail light lens which focuses some light off center to cars in other lanes.

On the LM Corvair a LED bulb with 360 projection (led chips on all sides) like the Superbrite bulbs in a housing painted flat white works well. Since the tailight lens effectively blocks non-red light a red LED bulb is the most efficient.

I must have used the best silver made....Silver reflects 96% of the light that hits it....white is about 90%....my lights are extremely bright.

One photo of my tailight from the side, the LED's I saw would not show they wer on from the side....exposed for true color...and then a shot of the car with brake lights on....if you cannot see these....you need an EYE SEEING DOG .

This is what I used, I have a nice pile of LEDs that cost less on my bench. These are killer bright, as in you don't even want to look at them directly when the light is not dispersed by the lens. They are plug and play and oriented properly when the bulb socket lined up with the index. Even though the projector lens is not pointing directly at the lens, it does not matter. There is more light coming off the sides than though to lens. The only mod is a grounded electronic flasher unit.

After I had the bulbs in for a while I added 3M tape which I had left over from another project. That jacked it up another notch.

I also used the same companies white/amber switch back in the fronts in conjunction with AZdaves clear lenses. Again killer bright, it works a looks like recently manufactured car. Thanks again Dave for a great product.

I have actually just ordered a set of 2 amber colored, 2 white, and 2 red LEDs for my car as well as converted the headlights to a semi-sealed headlights which will have new LED 12500 lumen bulbs x4. When I get everything finished I'll post so photos. Then the whole car will have been converted to LED.

Do you have a link?

I put a pair of LEDs 12400 per pair in my Sorento projectors. They were supposed to be the brightest. Your are claiming twice that. I'm planning on working on the Vair headlights this winter, LED projectors.

Here are some videos in the garage of projected light. I tried some straight on but it saturated the camera and looked white. I will try again in the AM with ambient light.

Hey JO, your lights look pretty good so far, I went with the colored lights instead of just white because I think the white LEDs tend to wash out the color a bit, I'm not sure if you're using colored bulbs or not but they look good. Here are the links for the bulbs and headlight assemblies I am using. Also did you install resistors for your LEDs? I bought enough to do everything to make sure there are no "hyper" flashing. One last thing, you don't have to get the headlights with the "halo" rings but I just thought it would add to the look for mine. I have also ordered a new wiring harness which will support up to 100 watts per bulb, which is how I purchased the bulbs,.... whats the highest lumen per 100 watts lol.

Will be interesting to see how much cooling they need....

That will determine how much cutting you'll have to do...

John 27 SMDs are not that bright... I used 64 elements for the Tail / Brake / 1157.

And for Backups /1156 I used JDM Focused CREE's in a modified LM [ rear mounted]
