LED TAIL LIGHT BULBS
Posted by: bobg1951chevy ()

Has anyone used LED bulbs in the LM Corvair tail lights ?

If so, do you believe they are beneficial ?

Thanks.

Absolutely YES.... search "CREE" here for several writeups and tips on how to chose types and mounting in stock housings.

The one thing I could 'show off' at the 2nd Annual Hoosier Corvair Classic was the replacement of ALL 1157 and 1156 bulbs with LED's! grinning smiley

I should write this up for the Communique!

WalMart sells a package of two #1157 LED Replacements for $14.95! They are available in different colors. I bought a set of WHITE LED's for the Front Parking/Turn sockets and a set of RED LED's for the Rear Tail/Brake/Turn sockets. I used WHITE 1156 LED's for the Backup Lights.

These don't fit directly out of the package but there is a simple mod that makes them work. The LED bulbs don't go deep enough into the sockets to 'turn and lock' in place because the lower PC board is too big. Using my shop grinder I was able to grind off the excess so they fit the GM sockets! smileys with beer

Not bad for off the shelf, well priced LED's!

They work well (I drove home in the dark after the show and they worked very well)! They cut down on the current drawn and should last "forever" in our Corvairs.

Just my experience, yours may vary! eye rolling smiley

Do your directional signals work properly? The flasher unit relies on resistance in the light circuits, but LEDs have much lower resistance.

OK,I need to post a picture to show "what" to grind. eye popping smiley

It is the "lower" round printed-circuit board on the LED assembly. It is too big and won't let the "LED Bulb" to go into the socket!

I put in an LED flasher for the Turn Signals. The original 4-Way flasher works with the LED bulbs. cool smiley

On a 67, 68, or 69 the Turn Signal flasher is located behind the dash, left of the steering column. The flasher located on the Fuse Block is the 4-Way unit.

I agree,his units are EXCELLENT!!

On the other hand, they are not 'plug and play' like these. sad smiley

I discovered them by accident while buying bulbs for the Lincoln!

For the price I thought I should try them out. I am glad I found an off-the-shelf item that I can find a replacement for in any Wal-Mart!! hot smiley

I do use LEDs in places, but the best tail lamp improvement I got was simply painting the tail lamp housings with high temperature white paint. Also added separate ground wires to the sockets.

When I showed folks they typically said - Wow are those the new bright LEDs. I had to prove they were just plain old incandescent bulbs.

Is there a particular brand of paint that you prefer? thanks Junk

I converted my 66 entirely to LED's, including the dash and back-up lamps. All of the LED's were from Superbrite. They fit the original front and rear housing with no mods. The difference in intensity was incredible, even with my old age darkened tail lenses. I used exterior LED's that were the same color as the lenses.

I used the Superbrite lamps for the Corsa instrument cluster. I tried the "Cool White", "Green", and finally settled on the "Warm White" LEDs. They really brought out ALL the colors including the orange needles. A noticeable improvement and they do dim.
BTW - use the "Green" LEDs for the turn signal dash indicators - a dramatic difference. Now I can see the indicators in the daylight, even in my convertible with the top down.

I was able to change the rear tail/turn signal lights with Walmart LEDs in my 64 Monza. No problems, no grinding and they work fine. Left the front turn signal lights alone.
