Seam sealer? Floor repair
Posted by: BigGeorgesVair ()

I am starting my 'winter project' on my Vair. Basically to clean, remove surface rust and Por15 my floors.(new carpet) I've found that the original seam sealer is hard and brittle and coming up.(see pic)
My question is should I apply new seam sealer before the por15 or after. Or is it necessary?
Thanks
George

I would say after so the POR can do what it can to stop the rust.

do it after POR, 3m seam sealer seems to be about the best and closest to stock if not the same.

After but what are you going to do about all that rust? POR15 won't stop rust unless you remove what is there first. I don't think seam sealer does anything on an old car. It was to seal the pinch welds etc. in case there was a gap. At this point, the gap is full so why replicate the sloppy seam seal work!

I use 3M seam sealer. Old stuff if going on clean steel. Newer urethane type if going over primer/paint. That's IF you go to bare steel to remove all rust.

If doing a simple wire brush clean up and covering with POR15 don't waste your money on seam sealer.

The factory seam sealer is a waxy material. It comes off easily with a Harbor Freight vibrating tool with the steel blade attachment.

When I replaced my floors I used Rustbullet paint, which is similar to POR15. I put a heavy application of paint down first, some of which dripped through to my garage floor. At least I knew the gap was coated internally. I then went over it with seam sealer. You can get it at your FLAPS.

I used Sikaflex A1, before Rustolium but my floor was super solid. It only had bad factory sealer and needed to be cleaned up.

I used regular black GE RTV silicon, good for "30 years", and far cheaper. I'm not quite sure what "real" seam sealer does beyond RTV.

They make a less expensive single speed unit, but they don't show the blades tools so you may have to get them separate.

Buy ear sound protection!!

RTV adhesion is far less than a good seam sealer. My experience is RTV does not stand up since it peels and comes loose.
