IMPORTANT INFO!!! Flaming River quick-ratio steering boxes.
Posted by: Seth Emerson ()
Date: November 07, 2017 10:53AM

I met with the president of Flaming River Industries at the SEMA show in Las Vegas this past week. She confirmed what I had previously surmised. They will not be producing any more fast-ratio steering boxes for the Corvair. It was a complex explanation, but that was their conclusion. The several, specifically different, internal parts would be unique to this box and they didn’t want to produce these parts in the smaller quantities. I have not completely given up on the quick-ratio steering box. I am working with a US company with the possibility of building a kit of those several unique parts needed to convert a standard ratio box to a quick ratio. This is still a long shot, but I will keep you informed as I go.

That's great Seth! I wish you success and will buy some if the price isn't too crazy. I think it's a mod that all Corvairs need.

Seth, can you get your hands on any of the defective boxes? They might be useful for parts.

I thought all the Flaming River Corvair boxes were a faster ratio vs. stock.

So this means NO MORE Flaming River steering boxes for the Corvair?

Guys - Nothing is going to happen on this for a while more. As I mentioned I have feelers out for new quick boxes (unlikely), a kit for a conversion of a GM box to a fast ratio and a new production regular ratio box. I have no boxes. None of my dealers have any. I cannot speak for anybody else. Stay tuned.

The Flaming River site still shows the box, maybe their site isn't updated.

I talked to a sales rep at FR, there is an administrative hold on the remaining boxes.
The rep will determine the nature of the hold and availability of those last boxes.
I should receive an answer tomorrow.

Glad I got mine when I did about a year ago. My stock GM box was leaking. I bought it thru California Corvair and had them install it.

I'm not sure you would like the NOS or even USED prices of GM quick boxes! LOL I put a rebuilt one up WITH arms for $1500, thankfully there were no takers so it is now in the race car!

I looked into this a little over 10 years ago and actually had deposits, my biggest thing then was cash and time. FR was just about to come out with the fast ratio box. Now may be the time to look into this again.

Yikes, $1500! I am glad I bought my rebuilt GM QS unit with arms years ago, best investment I've made.

So Seth, did you find out how many they actually sell in a year?

LOL, I really didn't want to sell it but it was rebuilt by me and painted to look nice and had all primo parts inside. If someone wanted it I was not going to give it away.

Also keep in mind there are people here that have some GM quick boxes but are hanging onto them just like I am, simply because of supply and demand. There is no supply right now!

The irony is all of the people that suddenly want one. There are people with NOS GM quick boxes out there. But they don't grow on trees

$!500 for an NOS or rebuilt GM quick steering box to me is just not worth the money. Id rather put that into something else on my restoration.

We have not given up on this. the supply line dried up about 8 months ago. Unless someone has stored one on their shelf, there are no new FR boxes around. I promise that I will get the word out on any box availability as soon as info comes to me.
