Looking for more information for driveline development by GM for the corvair manual transmission. Specifically information on the "flexplate" and its part in the system design.

I seem to remember that his tech talk was transcribed and posted somewhere. That was a very good tech session, funny guy also!

Such a great read, I've read it several times and always find something new.

Good speech!
I didn't realize the LM fans were aluminum. I have always heard that they were magnesium. ???
Anyone have a link to the video dragging the Corvairs under water he talked about?

The 64 and later fans are magnesium! There were experiments with aluminum and also plastic Delrin!

...and finally magnesium.

This is the transcript of Mr. Benzinger's public speech, not an edited text from a written document.
The speech was given a decade and a half after his work on the Corvair.
Thanks to Bob Helt for transcribing this for posterity.

Now when folks argue about using a solid flywheel - I just send them to the transcribed Benzinger document.

How fortunate an important part of Corvair design history was saved.

Unfortunately, the tape cassette that recorded his speech has been lost.

And now while I'm thinking about it someone must have a tape of Don Yenko's speech at the Phila convention. I don't remember the year, but it had a lot of details about the Stinger modified 4-speed transmission.
if anyone has such a tape, I'll transcribe it to a document. My recording is too noisy to use.

When Cactus Corvair used to host the mini-conventions on even numbered
years in the 80s Prof Benzinger was a speaker at one of them. It was the
meet where the banquet was held at a golf course/country club restaurant.

He spoke of many of the same subjects because we asked the same questions.
Did that evening get recorded?

best wishes, Steve

Hi Steve,
Sorry, I don't remember that particular event. As I remember, Bob Benzinger did make a speech at one of these mini's on the choice and selection of pistons for the Corvair engine. I, unfortunatly, was not able to record that speech.

He also spoke at the national in Flagstaff in the early 2000's. That speech was video-recorded by a well known Corsa member at the time. I wonder what ever happened to that tape?

Also, Sid Stewart III, video recorded a Benzinger speech given to a small group at an SAE meeting in Phoenix on the design of the Corvair engine going from two main alum castings to multiple castings.. I wonder what ever happened to that tape too?

You need to look at the transaxle, flywheel, and starter asm patents I posted on Facebook Corvair Preservation page. The coverpage or similar artwork will be shown, along with the inventor(s) name(s) and the patent number. Then download them from Google patents. Cote was an inventorfor one of the transaxle drivetrain asms, and Adelbert Kolbe is featured in many. HTH
