Not Starting Solved!!

Pull out of garage yesterday and 2 hours later attempted to put it back in the garage and it will not fire. When cranking, if I hold pedal to floor, it will hit a time or two but never starts. Assuming that it might be flooded, I left it alone overnight and tried fir with no gas pedal and then with my normal one pump to get a squirt and set the chokes and again, no start. Here is what I have done so far:

Checked carbs for good squirt
Pulled plug to check for spark
Checked points gap
Checked that timing marks aligned with TDC on #1
Checked static timing

All seems to be in order but still no go so I moved on to some coil testing:

First checked the battery with the ignition on and got 12.27 V
Checked across coil terminals with points closed and got 5.03 V
Checked coil positive to ground and got 5.29 V
Checked coil negative to ground and got 0.24 V

All coil checks were with the ignition on and points closed. I don't know what these numbers mean so hopefully someone who does will chime in.

I did replace the coil from my other vair but still no go.

Any ideas on what I might be missing will be greatly appreciated. In case it matters, this is a 110 powerglide setup in a 62 sedan.

What happens if you spray starter fluid in the carbs and then try to start it?

Check the rotor.

Recently (couple years ago), I found that the tab inside the rotor had broke (no clue why).

So, you could twirl the rotor with your finger - distributor turned fine; rotor did not move.

Plugs fouled?
12v cranking resistor bypass not working?

Tried starter fluid, no change.

Rotor is fairly new but yes, I checked that when I checked the points gap. Like Matt said, I have spark at the plug.

Plugs are not fouled, also fairly new. Not familiar with the 12v cranking resistor bypass. Please explain further.

Bad question but....do you have compression?

Steve, I definitely have compression but I haven't done a cylinder by cylinder test. I will do do that tomorrow and report back.

Freeman... just pull one spark plug and with a finger in the hole just crank the engine... if compression is one..... that means the camshaft is rotating..

Thank you Matt I didn't want to say that. Freeman just check one hole
as Matt says. Hope it will be something simple and easy

So it sounds like I'm checking for a possible cam gear or shaft failure. sad smiley

Thanks Steve and Matt for the idea and explanation before I did a 6 hole compression check.

Report tomorrow.

Check the wiring for varmints eating them.... sitting outside for two hours will not cause it to suddenly fall apart....maybe it was flooded then but now sitting outside overnite might cause some hungry mouse to partake in your wiring.

We had a good conversation saturday about wires being eaten....it was more common than we all thought.

Happened to me on my way to Charlotte one time...was about 70 miles away from home...looked at the oil pressure....zero....checked it and drove on...it had oil...about 10 more miles it started jerking and barely running...one wire was just about into and found the one that was completely in two....fixed the wires and off we went.

Speaking of flooding....my mechanic that was so great told me of one time he had a neighbor who flooded her car and he had to change all the plugs to get it to start....it had killed all the plugs by flooding.

Thanks RM but it didn't sit outside overnight. We pushed it back into he garage. I am getting spark to the plugs so I don't thing it's the plugs or wiring. I did however go over the entire engine harness but didn't find any obvious problems.

Thanks RM for giving this some thought. If I haven't already, I will investigate all suggestions received starting with the compression check.

I was talking about the wire from the starter solenoid to the coil that bypasses the resistor wire and supplies 12v when cranking. If that isn't working the spark can be weak enough that it won't start. That wire came loose on my Spyder near the 2 wire starter plug and it would crank without doing anything and would try to start when you let off the key. (And would often start that way)

Freeman....get fire to the plug and the plugs being dead from flooding are two different things....one says that fire is going to the plug and what I said even if fire gets to the plug...the plug is incapable of firing.

Have you put some gas down into the carbs to see if it fires? That is my first check when there is NO STARTING.If no start or attempt to start, then you know its not a gas delivery problem...it is an electrial/ignition problem. If it tries to start when you release the key, it is as joelsplace said.If electrical, I would start at the distributor, crack in the cap, condenser, something going to ground, check the timing and point dwell, run a jumper wire from the positive on the battery straight to the + on the coil and try and start the car....don't leave that wire hooked up though....just a test only.

I cleaned out a mustard container and use that to feed gas into the carb.

If you started it and drove it out of the garage and it was fine, and then two hours later would not start, I would not suspect all the pistons came loose in those two hours...LOL.

I had some difficult starting. Finally found a valve inside the Fuel pump was sitting cocked, not seated flush. Corrected that and starting problem solved.
