pg transmission fluid?

I have a question on fluid.

While reading thru the service manual it calls for type a transmission fluid. Looking up prices on O'Reilly auto parts website they list type a fluid made by Pure Guard. It is cheaper than say Valvoline dex fluid.

Now mind you all I've ever used in past has been Dex II or III, so im curious if using the type a would be better for the transmission or just stick with the Dex, since I've never heard of pure guard?

I'm looking at the price difference as well of almost 2.00 a quart.

Type A was superceded by Dexron a very long time ago. They just keep making improvements to the formula. They're all reverse compatible meaning Dexron III or Dexron VI is just fine. Note that GM no longer allows Dexron III to be called Dexron III so you'll see it for sale as DexMerc or MD-3 (Mercon/Dexron-III)

Thanks Craig. It was a cost difference I was looking at the most.

But all the fluid I have in the shop is DexMerc.

Just being cheap i suppose. At 2 bucks a quart cheaper I thought I could save a few bucks.

One of these days I want to get that fuse from you for the red wire in the engine compartment.

I just got this Circuit Breaker for my Camaro. I will probably get a 30 or 40 amp one for my Vair. It does the job of the junction block and a fuse. It has the nice feature that you can pull power off the 10 gauge wire without pulling any securing nuts.

That looks nice Al. However I'd like to suggest it's way too close to the actual max current seen in normal use.

A low battery can draw up to 30 amps and if the alternator goes TU and you happen to have lots of things turned on, draw can exceed 30 amps. Circuit breakers are thermal devices so they run very hot near their trip point. That's not good for long life and nuisance false-trips are a bad deal too.

When there's a real issue, the momentary current will far exceed the recommended 60 amp fuse/breaker;think "1000 amps". There's no reason to cut it close with the breaker/fuse and lots of reason to give it some margin. That's why I suggest 60-80 amps on the fuse/breaker.

Type A was declared obsolete in 1969. It is still sold because people buy it on price. It has no ant-wear, thickens seriously in cold weather and thins in higher temps, oxidizes quickly, leaving varnish on discs,

You can use the standard Dexron III/Mercon generic products (no longer certified by GM, but still good for our cars). The new cars need synthetics for the high temperatures.

This gives you an idea of cold flow properties of the different fluids
