I need to ship a 140 engine cross country from San Diego, Calif. Any ideas for a reasonable shipper? What is the best way to crate a 140 engine?

Cannot help you with a shipper...but Build a WOOD BOX to encase it...start with a small pallet.

Check into Fedex Freight. It is portal-to-portal, rather than door-to-door, so you need to get it to their nearest freight station. On the other end, the recipient needs to pick it up at a Fedex freight station. I shipped a Lotus Twin-Cam engine that way a few years ago and Fedex was the least expensive shipper.

I bought a 36"x36"x36" crate from ULine. It was cheap and rated for shipping. I shipped to So. Cal using a contract shipper. Cost less than $200 to ship. They were not great about timing but I didn't need it done in a hurry so it was fine. U-Ship is OK but often the first offers are from brokers and high. Wait until the last minute of your auction to get the best prices. Check the sellers ratings.

Fastenal offers their third party shipping for heavy pallet box. Have a chat with your local store to confirm their requirements.

Check Forward Air. You have to bring the engine to them and the buyer would pick it up near his location. You can secure it to a skid with shrink wrap and tie downs. There is a Forward Air center in San Diego. Yes it is a little of a PITA but you should get good pricing.

I use Freightquote.com and they shop for whoever fits the requirements. I take it to the Machine Shop guy who has a forklift. You can ship to somewhere where there's a forklift or pallet jack to unload or I suppose you could get it somewhere without those on a truck with an endgate. You just need to work out addresses and requirements before you call for a quote. You also need the dimensions and weight.
I build a pallet that fits and secure the engine to it with an angle piece of steel using the bottom 2 bellhousing holes and the botton 2 rear housing studs with the motor mount plate removed. I ship a core engine on an open pallet or build a crate with OSB and 1x2 frame for something nice.
I brought an engine to a terminal once where they came down a ramp and outside with a forklift.
Anything going by Air needs to be certified empty of fluids, I've never done it so don't know the process.
I haven't had any trouble but one careless fork to an engine on an exposed pallet could be really bad. I'd want the receiving party to look it over before just signing for it.

Set up a free account with U-Ship. Then everybody including the LTL (less than full load) will / can quote. Take or have several photos taken just before or during the load and unload process and pay for insurance.

Check with Harbor Freight for they use to ship large items like log splitters. I can't remember the company but they did a good job shipping my splitter a few years ago.

If trying ship, set up a new google email just for it. I was overwhelmed at the response I once got, and they kept emailing for months.

Exactly what Ryan says....dummy email address.

I used Uship to ship a dune buggy frame from WA to IA....emails from shipping companies for months, even after I rec'd the shipment.

Yes, I used U-ship. And I then ended up with CFR Rinkens. And from my perspective it all went down hill from there.

Email this guy: Jim Chase with Global Transit

JChase@globaltranz.com

You will need to give him the size and weight of your crate (yes build a box on a standard pallet).

Tell him Jerry from Archibald Sheet Metal referred you.

Good luck
