A bit off topic, but I always wondered why there are so many different holes in the brake drum; it is almost as if it were designed for multiple applications, but for the life of me, I do not see any symmetrical patterns other than the four holes for the early model Corvair.

I used to use the extra holes to pry a drum off the hub with a tool made from an old screwdriver, when they got rusted onto each other. It might have something to do with the machine that balanced them when they were manufactured.

Extra [smaller] holes are for rivets. Front drums on an early are riveted to the hub.

"Extra [smaller] holes are for rivets. Front drums on an early are riveted to the hub."

The finned drum was only used on the rear of a 1964. Also, no early model rear drums were riveted to any "hub" on the front drums.

I'd say the holes are for manufacturing reasons.

I mis-typed I meant to type riveted "only" on the front drums.
