Dash Lighting
Posted by: vacorvairlover ()

So while I was working on my 65 this past week I decided to freshin up the dash and gauge cluster. The warning lights were more of an orangeish cream color now after years of sunlight as were the turn signals (very light green). So I disassembled the gauge cluster and painted the inside of the rear casing Silver to replace the Mint green originally painted from the factory. I did this so that hopefully whatever color or shade of bulb I put back in for the back lighting it would reflect that color without the greenish tint. Here is what I have used for bulbs.... I used Super Bright LEDs for the back lighting (has something like 27 LEDs), and single LED (just one) which were colored. I got a kit which came with 2 red, 2 green, 2 blue, and 4 white LED bulbs which fit right in. I put the red bulbs in for the warning lights, the green ones for the turn signals and a blue one for the high beam, removing the light filters for both the high Beam light and the turn signals. and this is what the out come is. I'm very happy with this and will be able to clearly see every aspect. Especially the warning lights as they are much much brighter and more red than factory.

Hi John. Your dash lights turned out great! Can you tell me what kit you got? I would like to do that with my corvairs. Thanks Steve.

Here are the 2 links to the E-bay ads which are what I purchased. I have 1 extra high powered bulb left and 4 of the white single ones left.

thanks for the complements, The running lights are on full blast as I was just using a simple power supply to run them I am still able to dim these if I should wish to. I still plan on painting the speedo gauge needle as its totally faded.

I will finish my clear coat this weekend on the car which includes the dash, then install the stereo (aftermarket single DIN) and will put some photos of that as well. I will actually be able to color match the shade of these dash lights with the color of the stereo so everything should match rather nicely.

Paint the needle lightly... the weight of Paint throws off the calibration!!

So did you refinish the dash panel as well? It looks pretty sharp.

I did, I will go back over it this weekend with a fine tipped brush and go around the pods again to get everything exact. Its kinda hard to tape that off and get it 100%.

Matt, Thanks for the info on the needle paint. I did have a question about the fuel gauge... when testing the lights I touched a terminal for the fuel gauge and the needle started moving which is why its way over in the photos, has this damaged the gauge at all? Would I need to go ahead and put it back to Empty when re-installing that and an new tank with sending unit, run power though the circuit to re-establish where Empty is?

Nope All is well.... our gauge system is different then most... The needle stays where it was when you turned off the engine.

Looks great, you've inspired me to do the same. I added LED last year but never thought of painting over the green(sh) housing color.

Ok so you can't change the bulbs in the warning lights? If so I would get two red LED's for those, then green for the rest. Just trying to get the count correct before I order.

The way the Warning Lights are wired they need an "incandescent (with a filament) bulb" to work properly. Use the Factory Bulbs! LED's won't work properly here.

LED's work great for Illumination.

I used white in mine and it looks good. These is a write up in my thread about "New home for Mouse House 110 engine." Also explains how I fixed up new turn signal green indicator lenses and blue hi beam indicator lens. Indicator.
