Yes. With a Corvair engine you have to reverse the rotation.

901 trans up to 1970? can use VW like adapters
901 trans 71-73? uses a pull clutch pressure plate
915 trans has larger input shaft pilot bearing and pull clutch and starter ring gear is not on the flywheel ,
but it's all been done

Reverse rotation Corvair engine bolted to 901 Porsche gearbox using Kennedy adapter being installed in Porsche 914.

I say again, there is nothing as sexy as a well-built Corvair engine. The tri=ported heads are like a beautiful evening gown! Thanks for that Dave.

David... please tell us your plans..... different layouts take different amounts of fabrication, etc..

Hey guys, I don't know what I am going to do. but i was thinking of building a turbo motor and i would like to have a 5 speed. I was also looking to to do it kind of cheap don't want to end up with a $10000 project

A good used Porsche 901 five speed will eat up a quarter of your budget.

A good used Porsche 915 five speed will eat up a third of your budget.

Porsche 930, G50, and turbo five speed transmissions start at $5000+.

If you plan to use the P word at all you better bring your check book.

It's true that most Porsche transaxles have gotten pretty pricey but I have been wondering about using an early Boxster transaxle. Follow me here: in the stock configuration, it's a mid-engine layout with the Boxster motor turning normal direction. So if you bolted it to a Corvair in a rear-engine configuration, "in theory", it would work...provided it will live if rotating in reverse rotation.

I have it on my to-do list to talk to a local Porsche shop and see what they think but haven't gotten around to it yet.

The early 5-speeds are pretty cheap ($500 or so on Ebay) and would easily handle a Corvair's output. Cable shifted as well. You would have to fabricate an upper control arm of some kind but that's certainly doable.

The Boxster S 6-speed with LSD would be even sweeter but they are considerably more $.

Somebody should give it a shot.

John VH Roberts was telling me he can get G50's for $1000-1500. Obviously I called BS on that claim.

Guys have mentioned the Subaru 5 speed but that requires a $1500 reverse ring and pinion and still requires fabricating an adapter plate.

Steve sez: probably Kennedy (KEP). There is an adapter to SBC into the Boxster, I saw a 914 with LS and Boxster 5 speed at a car gathering this fall. I understand that Hobart Kennedy would/could make an adapter for any combination that someone could dream up. All you can do is ask.

best wishes, Steve
