It doesn't have additions for problems removing 50 year old fasteners and dealing with missing, mismatched or cobbled together components. I also don't see an addition for "Clean Shrouding".

The labor allowances at dealers are no better today either! Those labor times were primarily used for repairs under warranty, which I think was 12 months or 12,000 miles? in the'60's. When the warranty ran out, the labor times went up.

Yes, CP (customer pay) was always higher. But I am also sure if one knows the system and the product they could do OK. I always wondered how they were able to make customers happy regarding oil leaks.

Jim, these times were for when the cars were new or fairly new.

I worked at Ford in the 70's. We made good money by knowing which R&R to call out for maximum hours. Made up for the book like this where we lost money. You learned quickly what to include so you didn't under bill for work done.

The camshaft replacement labor in the GM book above was 12 hours. In the Motors Labor manual that shops used when the car was out of warranty, it paid 17 hours.

It has a lot to do with how often you do something. I'm sure there are many on this forum that can easily beat those numbers if the parts aren't corroded or mismatched.

Back in the 60's I had to maintain my 68 C20 and a 68 Suburban. With all the river crossings (no bridges) we were lucky to get 6 weeks out of a throwout bearing, meaning on average I replaced one every 3 weeks. I got to where I could replace one in 25 minutes with a helper.

Flat rate times haven't gotten any better for newer cars. If it's a recall, it's even worse. 12.4 hrs for all 4 piston and ring replacement on some 4 cylinder Hondas.
