Sadly "Old" means nothing today...a 50 year old person was a child when these were wildly popular.

Then I'll guess 90% of people that work on these cars don't know how!

-------------------------------------------

Go to a Cruise in or car show, find a car owner with Chevy v8, and ask, "WHO adjusts YOUR valves"

They will either answer "I do" or know who does..... get that name / number.

Explain to them you have a Chevy Corvair engine with the same Valve train setup as SBC's Hydraulic lifters and all.

Ask if they could show you how at their garage... or would they be willing to come over to you...

You may be surprised!

But it can go either way....

The other day I was helping Carl Jones on his UV [ 22 ft. Vair powered Motorhome ] Parked in a Shopping center..

Over 7 people stopped to ask questions.... only ONE asked if we needed any help!

Also.. please remember... adjusting Hydraulic valves is a ONE TIME operation as the engine is put together.

These are not VW Air cooled that require a Valve adjustment every 3,000 miles when you changed oil.

So MOST people have never had a need to learn how..

Might I suggest for a novice:
If you can figure out one valve that is adjusted correcttly see how many threads are showing above the rocker adjusting nut and set the other questionable rockers to the same amount of threads showing. I have done this on Chevy v8s to save time when replacing one lifter.
Typically there are three threads showing on a V8. It may be different on a Corvair. Perhaps someone here can check on an engine that is correctly adjusted.

Ed I told troy that 20 pages ago! On Vairs 2-3 threads showing... always works to get started...

He's got just one or two clacking.... I told him how to find the ones making noise...

He needs to find a Human! gg

thanks again, here is a picture of the color its going to be.....
it will look better than about 15 different colors and bondo....

it should look great, im pricing out paint jobs, and im probably not going with maaco or anything, i want a fairly decent paint job, and i know youll have to pay for it, but it will be worth it, curb appeal wins always!!

Troy not offended here either. I hope you watched and learned the lifter pre-load/rocker arm adj procedure so you can help someone else as time goes along.

yup we actually pulled the pushrod tubes out one by one, tightening them as we go so the head doesnt get too loose, and took the lifters out and cleaned them out with brake clean and primed them a little with some ATF/oil mix thing he said worked for him 40-odd years ago, when he initially rebuilt it. so we went through all the lifters and they all pump now, as i had unfornunately suspected there was a few that had gone flat/not pumping because they were initally tightened too much and got junk in them. but now the good news is, they all work now, and after a solid 24 hours of work we got everything tied up back in the car. I guess i may have been slightly anebriated (JK) but for some odd reason i put the engine back into the car forgetting its coming back out for paint??!! anyway...it was good times and i learned a lot. Then we let it run while they were obviously too loose and clattered away, until the engine was hot, and tightened them up till no more noise, and another 1/2 turn. You can definietly tell the difference, it fires up easier, and runs/idles smoother and overall works a lot better.

thanks again all

Ok well im in the middle of fabricating up a decklid for the engine using the stock one, with the bottom part cut off so i can "dry fit" it up. Now my weird question is here, its most likely not possible, but is there anyone here that has an old mig/or tig welder that works, or needs minimal work done to fix it? I would buy one new, but i cannot afford it(you know how that is), and i need a little mig/or even tig, to do this sheet metal work, i realize that this is very unlikely that anyone has one or would like to part with it, but i might be able to get some verification with some people on here that i DO indeed pay, through paypal, and i really have no intentions of screwing anyone over, because that has happened to me too many times, and i really know how it feels and it sucks.....i got screwed out of about 500 dollars worth of gym equipment and i'm still pissed about it.

I also have some corvair parts that i can trade+money or something..... the problem is corvair parts aren't worth anything to, just anyone, so i'm putting it in here.

The reason i'm telling you this is: So you don't think i have any intention to scam you and wont pay you, and i really NEED a MIG or TIG welder bad!!

If anyone knows of one that is for sale or are looking to get rid of your old one cluttering up the shop, hey PM me and lmk. I will pay for shipping and the price we can agree on.

Thanks again, and i hope that someone can help me here.

Have you looked at Harbor Freight or ebay?

yup harbor freight welders are a little "whatever" like workable but would be better with another brand......

I just thought what the heck, might as well ask, and if i can help the trade with some parts that someone else can use, hey win, win. I dunno, hopefully....

Thanks
