Ok makes sense, should i get one of those from westach? Or just use an idiot light? Id really like to keep an eye on the temp though.
Is this the same unit?

I guess i always thought that the spark plug ones are not as consistant and not really accurate? I might be wrong.

I'm grin'n that you have it going. Good work. This thread has been going so long I forget whether there are any new bearings, pistons or rings in this build. If so (at the risk of sounding like your parents) take it easy on the revs and boost for a while. Lots of threads here about breaking in an engine.

As for the gauge I would go for everything on a turbo Vair. Gauge, super bright RED LED idiot light, a buzzer like the factory or better a loud sonalert.

Have fun, stay safe.

Thanks man

J.O. what do you mean so long i'v only had th car for like 3 months. Thanks for the motivation and the grining. winking smiley I dont think that is too bad for a newbie that hasnt even rebuild an engine before, to put it in a car and get it to run nice.

A question for you all. The turbo i think still leaks. I checked over everything and made sure i installed the seals right. It still leaks out the exhaust side still smoking but not as much. Im guessing that maybe the turbine seal is bad? I just got a new one and had the proper sleeve to install it with. What do you think could be wrong??

The turbo when i dont hook up the drain line it pukes oil out of there decently.

I dunno what happens after i hook it up. Does the tube have to be at a slant downwards to gravity flow the oil down??

Mine might be at a slight upwards angle.

ADHD kickin in but the idle is right because no more oil leaking into the impeller side. Other than the smoking its pretty good.

Advice or thoughts on what could be wrong?? Thanks

Troy W

Its not the 3 months, its my 72 year of brain! Did you look very closely at the surface where the seal makes contact. It must be perfect or the seal will leak. Ken Hand just posted that he may have a fix for this, if I read his post correctly. A slight angle should not be the issue, its made to go horizontal a little to help de-foam the oil before it returns to the crank case. You may have too much crank case pressure, pull the filler cap when its running, see if its blowing out.

Ok if there is too much crankcase pressure, what could cause this, not rings seated yet? And how do i fix that, is that also known as blow by?

So if there is too much crankcase pressure it wont let the oil back into the cylinder heads??

Thank you

Rings not seated will cause excess blow by thus pressure. Crank case pressure will cause some back pressure on the seal, but can't stop the oil flow. Do a search here on break in procedure for rebuilt engines. During it properly will make your work pay off for you in the long run.

ok makes sense ive ran it at fairly hi ish rpms for about 1/2-3/4 hr and hopefully got the rings seated properly.

What do i do to tell if the rings arent seated yet. If i open the filler neck, there will be lots of blowby, or oil mist spraying out??

Am i on the right track or not??

Thanks for your help

Some rings can take several hundred miles to seat properly.

ok sounds right.

Is Blowby when you take the oil filler cap off and oil mist sprays out while its running??

There is like oily fumes coming out of the pcv breather i have, is that bad or normal?

Thanks

You want a load on the engine to seat the rings. RPM ain't going to do it, you need cylinder pressure. I'm of the 'drive it like you stole it' camp of engine break in but that doesn't mean high rpm. It means boost!

No that is just oil being slinged by the crankshaft, etc..

That is somewhat normal on a fresh build and is the "Blowby" we are talking about.

Blowby has to be extreme to keep liquid oil from flowing back down...

I don't what the laws are there but in Oregon you can purchase a trip permit that allows you to drive around for a month for situations like yours.

I'd also simply tell them it is a VW. I would not confuse them with the Corvair engine swap or anything like that. I also found that talking to them in person yeilds better results than a phone call, at least in GA and OK.

Ha

Yup dont say anything about the engine. Just the car. Its fine.

Ill go there tonight

Thanks
