I did my 68 last winter. Changed the fender and nose part. Takes lots of patience, drill bits, heated garage, and lots breaks. Well worth it having a new fender.

Maybe I'm weird, but I love car surgery pictures. Something very satisfying about good metalwork.

Is there any reason not to just cut out the smaller area that is damaged and replace that with either a grafted part or fabricated sheet metal? I have typical lower fender rust damage and just planned to cut metal out and fab it into the spots. I have a parts car but only some of the metal is good for what I need. Typical old collision repair, lots of drilled holes and the metal pulled out. It had up to 1/2" of Bondo in some places! Going to be stripped to metal today.

Bob,
I can't weld but I try anyway. I've used panels from donor cars for small areas and it came out well. I say go for it.

Donor blood type is not a perfect match. The Corsa was trying to reject the Monza fender. Five hours in surgery today. At least the Corsa is out of intensive care. The surgeon plans to close next weekend.

Well done on a high-level project. I need to replace the lower sections of fenders at some point. How much new rust and corrosion did you find under the fender skin?

Bob,
I bought my 68 because it appeared to have minimal rust. Turns out all four corners, the battery tray and under the windshield had to be replaced. My 68 had extensive rust behind the smallest rust bubble. I treated everything I could get to with POR 15.Good thing patch panels are available.
This Corsa led a sheltered life and has no rust under the skin other than flash from setting for 20 years after a bad attempt to straighten a damaged fender.

Good job on the pictures, Bill. Gotta keep that witless protected! That's the most time I've seen him working on Corvairs since I've known him. Of course, he has had others projects (kitchen) taking up most of his time.

The fender's looking good. I like seeing things repaired correctly!drinking smileysmoking smiley

Accomplished a little more trimming today. Trying to get the panel gaps as close as possible before welding begins.Good thing he kept this special rust free donor panel all these years. Next time we plan to remove the emblems, weld up the holes, drill holes fora Corsa emblem and weld the fender in place.

Looking great!
I think you should keep the Monza Spyder emblems - keep 'em guessing!

Now that high strength small magnets are easy to get, I've thought of adding a few to the "shaved" backside of a set. Easy to install and take off!

Fitting and adjustments are done. Started welding the Monza fender in place today. The goal is an undetectable fender replacement. Let the grinding begin.

That is funny. Go for it.thumbs up
.
I keep getting asked if my lates are Spyders.
After seeing this, and since my coupe will NEVER be an all original show car, I am thinking that I should install some Spyder emblems on it just to play with the ignorant.grinning smiley
