Crazy questions. 64 Door locks
Posted by: radicalbuff ()

I got a key made today for the trunk and both doors which all had the same number code on them today. Trunk lock went in just dandy. The door locks however, I am not sure which one goes on which side. The car came with the locks off and many other parts off already so we didn't see how they came our or how they go in exactly. The key can lock the locks when out but when I try to lock the lock from the outside,(holding the lock portion onto the door with my hand) close the door to check if it stays locked, the door always opens up anyway. I can't find any good diagrams or explanations except the door can lock by pushing the inside door handle forward, the key insert should be vertical in the hole.

Does the door have to be closed or should be closed to lock it with the key?
How can you tell which lock goes on the drivers side?
Can anyone point me to more information or some pictures of how it is supposed to go back on? Not sure which direction the the tail of the lock goes, up? Down, pointing forward? pointing backward?

Thanks for any information that may help. I checked the Corvair manuals but Perhaps I missed something????confused smileyconfused smileyconfused smiley

If it yoy turn.tge key and it dose not lock, you.have wrong lock in tge wrong door. Tge little arm on tge end of the lock/tumbler assembly has a slot in it that slips over amd arm on the door latch mech. You cam see this wuth tge door panel off or sometimes through the hole in the door for the lock. You have to have the door panle off to install the retaing clip for the lock.

Also, the door has to be closed and locked from the outside with the key.

Seems to me that you push the inside lock button down, hold the outside button IN while closing the door. Release. Door is locked, no key needed.

I didn't think EM's had buttons.... you press down on the inside door handle, hold outer button and close?

Yes, there are NO push/pull buttons on the upper door of an Early...
If the handle points down, as it should, pushing the handle forward locks the door from outside access. Pulling the handle backwards opens the door.

Pushing the handle forward to lock and then holding the button while closing the door will not lock the door, the key has to be used to lock the doors from outside. And I know for sure that the 64 convertibles do not have buttons on the top of the door.

That pic of the Rampside in your signature pic on the rotisserie looks like a hovercraft.
