Transmission PG problem?
Posted by: Coach1 ()

Hello ,

I have a 1961 with an automatic transmission. Just had a rebuilt one put in but it is driving the transmission people crazy. When they put it in drive, it barely moves. When they put in in 2nd it slowly moves. Any suggestions?

I'd check the:
Fluid level (idling in drive)
Adjustment of the manual valve (shifter) inside the trans pan
System pressure (pressure test gauge)

If the system pressure is low or zero, it's likely the smallest splined shaft got pushed-in during assembly and is no longer running the front pump.

I have pictures if needed.

1st photo: Front pump's splined drive shaft pushed through tri-corner drive-washer. This happens when the torque converter is incorrectly installed over the three splined shafts.

When the drive washer is out of position, it's internal splines align with the inner snap ring groove so the shaft can't drive the washer and the washer can't drive the pump. (i.e. no go)

2nd manual valve (shifter in drive) should be just below the second web. In this photo it's way out of position.

3rd manual valve (shifter in drive) is correctly located just below the second web.

Well, to revive this thread yet again, I have a transmission problem. A 1961 PG in a Rampside. I just got this truck on the road a few months ago and have been driving it around without issue for several weeks. Now, this morning on a trip into the big city I suddenly lose my ability to move forward. The truck will go all day in reverse, but nothing in Drive or Low going forward. Any suggestions?

You've sheared the drive tang at the front of the trans...easy to get to! just lower it...

I THINK!!! to get it going just push or roll the RS to 15 - 20 mph and the rear pump willl make it work until the next time you stop!

Matt, you mean the three prong tang that attaches to the end of the long shaft? I got the truck home via AAA.

I don't think that is the problem, if that 3 tanged pump drive washer is stripped it would not still drive in reverse, it would do nothing, that pump runs all the time and provides internal pressure when the vehicle is sitting in neutral, and when coming up to speed until the rear pump takes over that runs off wheel speed. when the reap pump creates enough pressure the PG switches a valve and the trans runs off the Wheel speed driven rear pump, Front pump with the triangle washer runs the trans at slow speeds forward and entirely in Reverse, so if it was stripped you would have no pump pressure at all and no reverse, Go though the Diagnosis guide in the manual and find the description of your problem? also did you check the fluid level?

Dave, I sincerely hope you are right. I did not check the fluid as I just filled the transmission a few weeks ago and it isn't leaking anywhere, but it will certainly be worth the time and effort to check. I'll do that right now. thanks,

Well, I checked the oil. It was a pint low, so I added some but that didn't help. I did check the diagnosis checklist in the 61 manual and it mentioned not having any gears, or not having reverse. But nothing I saw mentioned anything about having reverse, and nothing on the forward drive, either in drive or low.

Looks like I'll be looking for another transmission. I don't have the skills or desire to rebuild a PG right now.

That is not an easy unit to find Cliff (assuming you have the FC trans fluid oil cooler). How far did you drive this in reverse?
Years ago I had the splines wear out on my axle yoke. It would not go forward but as I recall it went into reverse a little bit.
This is a long shot but let us know what you find.

IIRC just the front cover is involved with the remote cooler....easy swap

Timothy,

Here's the whole story. I was stopped for a light. Then as the light changed and the traffic began to move, I didn't. I didn't hear any noise coming from the back to indicate any problem. The truck simply would not go forward. Fortunately, I was right in front of an entrance to a small shopping center and when I tried reverse it worked fine. I probably backed it up at least 200' into a parking space. After having the truck flat-bedded back to the house, I backed the truck into the garage, again worked great. Still no forward gears.

And yes, it is the original with the remote oil cooler. I hope Matt is right about swapping out the front cover. I'm afraid it will be a while before I can get to it. My transmission guy is in the hospital right now so I will have to wait awhile to pick his brain.

In the meantime, keep the ideas coming. I would like to think that it is something simple that could be repaired, but I really know next to nothing about automatic transmissions.

Cliff, In our FAQ's are the mods to the front cover only for adding a cooler.

I'd pull it and check the drive tang.... even if you have reverse..

Matt, that Pump triangle washer runs the front pump, it is always spinning only one direction when the engine is running, if the splines were stripped it would not turn the pump gears and it would not still drive in reverse, it would do nothing in any gear, I will check later in my paper work as I have a complete diagnosis guide, Also, the front pump cover is different as it has the bungs for the oil cool, but there is also a mod needed to the inner pump section as well to make a standard PG into a FC with working cooler.

There's more to the FC oil cooling than simply the cover.
The FC front pump is different than the car pump.
The FC pump uses a different casting than the car pump.
ATF will not flow correctly internally trying to run the FC cooler and cover only.
Changing the front cover (or drilling it) sounds simple, cheap and easy but sadly it won't do the job.
