My New Fan!!
Posted by: 63turbo ()
Date: July 06, 2017 09:30PM

This is my experimental fan.... I just received it today, as in just now.
For years now, I've been staring at a computer model of this, waiting for it
to become a real thing to test.

Roughly 2 lbs... If the shop had been able to cut it right exactly to the CAD model, it would have weighed 1.4 lbs- I think the Mag fan weighs 1.3 lbs. I'm not complaining at all- this is a prototype, and is perfect as is for testing.
It would have been nice to get it lighter, but I'm not too concerned about that at this time

No Cavitation with greater pressure at higher RPM right? Radials are great at this... but build heat faster....time will tell.

Yes- no ( or very little) pulsing, and should not have a kooky "flat" spot
at 4k like the Mag fan has, and should be able crank out a lot more pressure and use a lot less horsepower, particularly at high rpm. One thing that has kept me particularly excited about this fan- Backward curving fans have a horsepower usage peak- once the peak is reached, further increases in rpm reduce the horsepower usage, but the flow continues to rise (although at a much slower rate of increase)- this unique property makes these kind of fans ideal for air-cooled engines. Its going to be darned interesting to see where this peak occurs.

Is that one of the units Ray Sedman was working on? Nice to see some progress. It has been a long time (2-3+ years?) in coming. Vairy cool! Even at two pounds its still way less than the boat anchor used in EMs. Torque killers (as well as belt tossers ggg).

Had this fan in my hands at VairFest last week.

Plus I saw the plastic prototype two years ago.

You two have put together quite a design.

Kevin, I offer my LM engine as a beta tester for the fan! grinning smiley

Seriously, this is a step forward for Corvair fans and, we hope, cooling. Is there a theoretical maximum airflow through the engine? Wondering if there is a point when no fan can flow more air through the fins. I know they can handle more than the stock fan since Porsche fans on Corvair's flow more.

Also, any reason not do make them on a 3D printer? Practically any material can be printed now, other than aluminum. A super strong polymer might work and might be easier to manufacture? Printing prices have dropped a lot in the last year and should continue to drop. You might be able to sell the print program and have people print their own. That would probably cause trademark and/or patent problems though.

That old marketing term "Super Turbo Air" will certainly seem more appropriate if you add that to a Vair!

Cant tell for sure from the picture, but are all the vanes equidistant from one another? Wont that sound like a siren (or a big vacuum cleaner)?

Just wondering, not a criticism.

Right On!! Yes this is one of the units that Ray was working on.... He has been an incredible asset to have to help me with this. I cant believe how long this project has actually gone on for.... If Ray hadn't been involved with this
I doubt it would have ever got to this stage!

Matt, please explain. None of the Chev engine tests show any type of a kooky flat spot in the mag fan's air delivery.
Where did you get your data?
