Oil puddling under ignition coil???
Posted by: kenzen ()

Noting my engine has run maybe an hour or 2 in the last 10 years, and never on the road, the good news is I've managed to get my 66 PG 110 timed and idling in the 600 rpm neighborhood, with even flow thru each carb. The off news is as I'm tuning the engine, a puddle of oil is slowly developing under the coil. It seems to be coming out of the vent hole below the coil. Where most likely is that that oil coming from?

thx!

The coil is probably bad, I had mine slip down and rub on the bottom and wear through. Pull it and look at the base.

You should ALWAYS carry a spare Coil and set of Points. (DAMHIK)

Is the coil mounted on the engine?

Follow-up: It was the coil, but when I took it out I couldn't see a leak. I took the old one and put it on my workbench. Zoom forward a few months while cleaning up a bit and I noticed that the coil was leaking from a very small rust pit hole in the middle of the body. I had painted the coil when I first put it in, so this masked the rust. Since the coil wasn't getting hot just sitting around, the leak rate was very small. Just wanted to pass this by the forum.

I took my car out for a test drive and noticed oil by the engine ID and on the tin in that area, it appears to be coming from the gasket under the oil fill cap.

It also can be the top cover or the delcotron adapter leaking

Absolutely! Still working some bugs out, and trying to get motivated to pull the steering column to install the missing spring/spacer on the lower shaft (that puts tension on the bearing sets and keeps the steering wheel from shifting around). I also have to wet sand and polish the paint - lots of hours for that. But overall she's running ok. I've put about 350 miles on her.

I had that going on as well. I'm thinking I was negligent and didn't put the cap on all the way, but I'm watching it.
