When I was at Willow Springs racetrack I was seeing oil temperatures climb to 265. My old GB camper 140 would hit 525F on the head temp when climbing California mountain passes.

Took my 65 Turbo up a 14 mile mountain climb on Sat. temp at base was 101, at top 72. I saw a max of 265 on the oil temp gauge. Can't tell you what my cylinder temp was as the brand new VDO VHT decided not to work about a mile into the climb.

I don't recall the actual temperature my car reached but I know it got hot!

Years ago in my Kelmark car, I got stuck in construction traffic on a very hot day and the water pumper got hot enough to overheat. There were no shoulders for me to pull over so I was stuck idling with no good flow of air.

The engine got so hot that the center of the temperature sending unit melted and allowed coolant to escape through the opening. It continued to get hot enough that it simply stopped running.

Fortunately for me, my younger brother happened to be in somewhere behind me and was able to flat to me with a tow rope to our destination.

After the engine cooled, I replaced the melted sending unit, filled the cooling system back up and the car was back in service again.

I had been afraid that I may have damaged the engine but I never saw any signs of it and that motor was still working well years later when I sold that car.

Yes it was HOT! And to top it off, It was a Black car with a Black interior, on an extremely Hot summer day. I certainly wouldn't want to repeat the event anytime soon.

Climbing Pikes Peak with my turbo, aggressive driving, but not crazy, set off the buzzer with the belt in place. That's 575. A few minutes of fast idle and all was well. It was cold outside, maybe 40 .

On a hot day, about 95°, running about an hour and a half at 70 plus MPH, got the cylinder temp gauge in my Spyder up to slightly above 525°. Turned on the heater, got roasted but the car cooled down a bit. Slowing down some helped too...

Seems like the OP was asking about oil temperature but replies are about cylinder head temperatures. I guess that would require running an oil temperature gauge.

Correct!! And even if people have them there are several different places to mount....resulting in radically different temps...

Although I've heard otherwise I feel the oil pan is the hottest.... where some have said right before the oil cooler is the hottest..

I've always monitored oil at the Pressure switch port...before the cooler... and never saw above 190f... in over 100f weather...

Living on the Oregon coast.... who cares!!!! gg

I think the original title line was modified, I don't remember oil temps when I replied. Getting old who knows, maybe Matt?

When a clubbie's '60 had a plugged oil cooler we measured 300F on the filter!

That little oil cooler does do a fine job of cooling, when it works.

When my light came on I stopped and measured the temperature of the oil filter. 106ºC (222ºF). So I ordered a new sending unit and haven't seen the light on since.

It was about 100ºF outside and I was at the end of a hard climb.

Oil pump exit is the hottest, oil cooler exit is the coolest, oil pan is in between. I've seen as high as 250 in the pan when running hard on a 100+ day (with the lower shrouds in place). I have sensors in the pan and at the oil pump exit.

Dave, what temp delta have you seen between those two sensor locations?

About 15 degrees. Unfortunately, I neglected to calibrate the two senders before they were installed, so that difference is approximate. When I get time I will do an "in-place" calibration.

I've run as hot as 240 F with my sender in the same place as Monza Dave. I was running 75 on the I-40 with the a/C on, lower shrouds installed and running a folded fin oil cooler. I'm running Royal Purple HPS 10-W-30 Synthetic motor oil, FWIW.

Ratt643, where is your condenser located, in trunk or in engine bay?

To answer the original question, going up to Oatman, AZ on Rt. 66. It was 114 degrees outside and the A/C was on, shrouds off. Head temp hit 425, oil temp was 240.

Today, on the other hand, (same car) 85 degrees outside, A/C on, and lower shrouds ON, oil temp hit 210.
