4 sp transmission shifter shaft does'nt move

Please educate me again. I have a rebuilt 4 sp Corvair transmission on the bench as I am trying to build linkages to my (non GM)shifter. Note that mine is not a Corvair car, just 1965 Corvair power train on a kit car. I am trying to understand the tranny. Why is the shifter shaft not sliding nor rotating. Is there a locking mechanism inside the transmission box, like if the clutch pedal is not pressed nothing will move? As you can tell I don't know much about transmissions. My only hands on experience was with a 5 sp Suzuki Samy and the shifter shaft there was free to move. Thanks for you help.

It is spring loaded...

1 Tie down the tranny on the bench

2 Insert input shaft and see if it turns easily..

3 Put a rod / screwdriver thru the hole in the end of the shaft / coupler removed

Yank Push / Twist..... typical "H" pattern with reverse spring loaded at the neutral gate...

You need big muscles smiling smiley or at least big screwdriver to slide it. It need power. Rotation move is quite small and should be easy. Reverse rotation move need power.

Thank you very much for all your help. I will buy an input shaft and try.

Although I guess it's nice to have a spare, an input shaft is not mandatory to bench test the shifting of a manual transmission.

Hello again,
I have done what you folks suggested, including fitting an input shaft and making sure that the gears are free to rotate. But the shifter shaft is still not budging. No rotation, no sliding. What should I do next?
Thanks

If you know who 'rebuilt' the transmission, take it back to them. If this is not known, let us know where you are located. Maybe there are some knowledgeable people near you.

False alarm.
I finally managed to get the shifter shaft to slide. All that was needed was indeed a bit more muscle. The rotation is not significant, but I suppose this is all that's needed. Thanks again to you all for helping.

Makes you respect what leverage that forward shifter sitting in a crusty housing gives you.
If the rotation is sufficient to go through the 1-2 3-4 gates and depress the reverse detent, that's all that's required.
