() Date: May 19, 2017 06:43PM Spec. is 13 deg BTDC, runs well at ~18 deg BTDC, which is at the edge of the graduated scale. Seems high too me, but runs better the more I advance it; thus far. Have not advanced further...experience...advice? Re: Ignition Timing - 61 Super Turbo Air 98 HP Posted by:

() Date: May 20, 2017 06:26AM I advance mine to where it will just barely ping on the lowest grade gas I can find, under the worst conditions. Then I run mid grade. Only use my timing light on the run-in test stand. '64 Monza Coupe 140 4 speed '61 700 Lakewood 95 4 speed '69 Monza Convert. 140 Auto. () Date: May 20, 2017 09:12AM My 1962 Monza 102/4 (similar Engine) also "likes" more advanced timing than the stock 13 degrees. It runs "OK" at 13 degrees, but much better at 17-18 degrees. However, I always run 93-Octane Sunoco. I'd suggest running 93-Octane gas, advance timing to run good and listen carefully for pinging. Re: Ignition Timing - 61 Super Turbo Air 98 HP Posted by:

() Date: May 20, 2017 09:37AM And please Remember....the Human ear cannot hear "light pinging" which just takes longer to do damage... I recurve my distributor's mechanical advance... 1 so I can set initial at 12-14 BTDC at idle...this allows a low rpm smooth idle and easy starts. I then run mechanical advance starting at 800-900 rpm to to add 20-22 deg. Crank advance by 2400 rpm. [ 10-11 distributor ] I dimple the end of the VA cannister to keep VA from pulling in below 12 inches hG. This way it only works at highway cruise normally. If you have a Tach... you'll see 90% of driving is between 2000 - 3000 rpm! MODERATOR Sea Mountain, between Charleston Harbor and Coos Bay! () Date: May 20, 2017 05:49PM Going from 51 to 52 jets may have helped avoid detonation (pre-ignition pinging) too. Re: Ignition Timing - 61 Super Turbo Air 98 HP Posted by:

() Date: May 20, 2017 06:25PM Assuming you're running the "new" 10% Ethanol/Gas, I recommend you: 1. Lower your Carb Float Setting ("new" gas is lower density than the "old/1960s" gas and can cause flooding) and 2. Increase the Choke Vacuum Break opening ("new" gas makes it start rich so you need more air). Just my $0.02 of experience with my 1962 102HP . . . . Also running 52 jets in the '63 Monza 102hp. 14* BTDC and no knock so far in 97deg FL sunshine. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum. |
