I for one sincerely doubt that OPGI has any interest in buying Clark's. I also doubt that Clark's would entertain selling to them if the opportunity came up. I would think they would offer it to their Employee's first.thumbs up
It would be beneficial for our community if the vendors could work together so both could offer a wider selection of parts to those who love these cars, but I doubt that would ever happen.

As far as a saturated, or slowly declining market. I guess that is subject to personal opinion.

A good example would be the Ford Model T and Model A. Look how old they are and how the market for these vehicles has increased and decreased over the years.

I do agree however that the way things are going with many of the younger generation seeing automobiles as nothing more than a way to go from point A to B.
The automotive hobby as we know it may slowly decline over the next few decades but also expect there will be enough interest to continue making it a worthwhile business venture for those producing and selling parts.

With some luck and continued interest in Corvair's in general, maybe folks like Dynacorn would see it a viable option to reproduce the Corvair unibody and related parts like they do for several other vehicles.

Curious about this very speculation, I made sure to attend the presentation called "The Future of Clarks" that took place during this past September's show at Clarks.

Cal Clark himself made the presentation, and the short answer to the above question is 'no.' Without going into great detail, Cal made it clear that the company will remain privately-owned and that more and more control and more and more equity is being transferred to long-time employees, such that the business will continue once Cal and Joan are in rocking chairs.

Relax everybody. The guy who put all the Corvair info together for OPGi is a Corvair guy. Daily drives a Greenbrier.
The corvair content has been delayed while they ramp up the new Regal catalog and parts.
They know the Regal parts will make them alot more money than the Corvair parts will.
Be patient.

Yes, I for one know a little about the guy (D.T.) that is putting the catalog together and his 1964 Daily Driver Greenbrier.

If he hadn't been a Corvair guy, I may not have posted the information about it on this site after reading it on another.

What makes me curious is why he has not posted anything here especially since this site appears to have had more of a response to the catalog than the other site. Maybe he is unaware of, or doesn't belong to this site for some reason.

If their catalog isn't up and running with more parts than generic crap at the moment, it shouldn't be up at all. I for one would rather wait patiently than to see it and be disappointed with what has been listed to date. It sort of makes me feel like a tenth class citizen.confused smiley

While I understand that the Regal parts may make more money for the company, it is sad to see that money seems to be the motivation, not the Hobby and how best to serve it's needs. JMO

For reference - The Company - looking out for their own interest, may have strictly limited the amount of data to be provided. I have seen this before in other instances.

Being a business owner myself you sometimes have to make decisions that do not follow your true desires. If you want to be successful you have to follow customer demands and sell things that keep you profitable. I also own a Buick Grand National. Those cars are immensely popular and the buy in for a driver quality one starts where high end Corvair start. Prices for them are entering the realm of the 60's and 70's muscle cars. Many of their owners have no qualms spending a lot money restoring their cars. So yes, I can understand why OPGI wanted to explore that first. And yes, money is always a motivating factor....unless you are independently wealthy and like doing charity work.

Our own CorvairMike owns the red LM on the cover of the catalog, also used in the TV commercial. I have a good story about him from my youth. I'll share it one day, maybe after I get my OPG catalog. smileys with beer smoking smiley

Just finished a Cutlass and Buick Special using some OPGI parts. Most parts are a close fit and need come coaxing or modification to fit well. Some are not usable and I've sent back a few things, the return experience is not bad. Customer service could be better, I've had to go to a manager more than once. As with most parts stores or warehouses, most order takers know part numbers and little about the parts themselves. Compare that to Clarks and although I've not ordered many items, the orders have been correct 100% of the time. Also , compare prices on items by just looking them up using a search. Carpet from OPGI: $150 + $60 shipping. Exact same carpet from OC Auto Carpets $125 with free shipping. Some items the ship and handling will outcost the part itself.

I think most Corvair owners will throw Cal Clark under the bus if they could save $1.00 on a purchase. LOL

Maybe "most" Mel but certainly not all. And when the chips are down, I suspect Cal Clark will still be our vendor of choice.

I'd be surprised if OPGI even outprices Clark's. As crvr63 mentioned above, their shipping and handling costs are pretty high, and their prices aren't terribly competitive with places like Summit that often sell the exact same part.

I imagine one would use OPGI for parts that can't be found elsewhere, but I can't imagine they'll stock anything Clark's doesn't have. I have an OPGI catalog for my '65 Skylark, so I've shopped there before.

I own six disparate vehicles, and I wish they all had a parts vendor like Clark's. The only one that really comes close is NPD out of Michigan, but they even have a somewhat bloated shipping charge on smaller items. Clark's only charges actual shipping.

With that being said, there's nothing wrong with a little friendly competition in the parts world, but I can't imagine Clark's has too much to worry about here, although I certainly don't wish OPGI any ill will in their endeavor.

I can't begin to list all the Corvair vendors that have come and gone in the past 45 years, but I can list the one and only one that has been there, through good and bad economic times. Clarks Corvair.. They started small, and grew as a result of hard work, and supplying the parts and service that Corvair owners needed and wanted. Their list of available parts far exceeds what any other vendor has offered in the past, or present day vendors offer today. I ordered a seat kit for my 1962 convertible, and Clarks had it ready for me in 2 days. A friend ordered a seat kit for his 1962 full size Chevrolet, and it took 3 months before he got it. Clarks is about delivering on time, every time, and no excuses! I will continue to support Clarks as long as I own a Corvair.

Not to start a s*** storm, as a new user here, I was wondering why I have never heard Corvair 1 mentioned. I ordered 2 used brake drums from them and was quite pleased with the price and service. I made the mistake a few years ago when I owned a GMC motorhome and mentioned I had bought something from a vendor not approved by the forum elite, if you will. I hope this is not the case here as I was persona non grata on the GMC forum for a while. Thanks.
